  1. CHKS Presentation for Healthy Kids, Healthy Oakland DataTask Force January 28, 2011 Juan Du & Jean Wing

  2. What is CHKS • CHKS: California Healthy Kids Survey • It is the “largest statewide survey of resiliency, protective factors and risk behaviors in the nation.” • Administered by WestEd since 1999. • Survey Population: Grades 5, 7, 9 and 11

  3. CHKS Survey Main Topics • Demographics • Resilience, Connectedness & Youth Development • Tobacco • Alcohol & Other Drugs • Violence & Safety Taken from WestEd PPT: How to Use Your CHKS Report

  4. CHKS in OUSD • Target Population: All Students at Grade 5, 7, 9 and 11. • Sample Design: NO sample. All schools are expected to participate for selected grades. • History of CHKS in OUSD: Since 1999. • Frequency of Survey: Every other year for selected grades. • Elementary Survey (Grade 5): 2010-11, 2008-09, etc. • Secondary Survey (Grade 7, 9, 11): 2009-10, 2007-08, etc.

  5. CHKS Work in RAD • Purpose: CHKS provides valuable longitudinal student-level data by school, and a sound research base for the survey questions related to school, family, and community protective factors necessary for children to thrive. CHKS is a major contributor to our Healthy Kids, Healthy Oakland data framework. • As we move toward becoming a full-service community district, CHKS data can also show us where we are making progress (and where we need to pay more attention) in creating protected pathways for children from pre-school to high school graduation and college.

  6. Work Deliverables • Provide school summary results in a user-friendly and interactive format for district and school leadership, community organizers, teachers and parents. • Provide clean raw data at the student level along with documentations for internal and external partners as the “Common Operating Data”.

  7. Example: Query CHKS • An interactive tool powered by Kidsdata.org which allows users to generate tables, maps, graphs and charts to compare key CHKS data at the district and county level. • Results can be broken down by gender, race/ethnicity, and level of connectedness to school. • Show example of “Nutrition” (Students Who Ate Breakfast in the Past Day).
