  2. background • Born December 9, 1906 in New York City • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Physics – Vassar College - 1928 • Master’s and Ph.D. in Mathematics – Yale University – 1930 and 1934, respectively • Associate professor in Mathematics - Vassar

  3. World war II • Joined US Naval Reserve in 1943 • Assigned to Bureau of Ships Computation Project at Harvard • Programmed for the Mark series of computers • Remained at the Harvard Computation Lab until becoming a research fellow under Navy contract (1949)

UNIVAC & COBOL • UNIVAC • UNIVersalAutomatic Computer I • Developed by Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation • Developed first-ever compiler during this time – the A-0 System • COBOL • Extension of Hopper’s previous work, combined with influences from IBM • Strongly believed that programs should be written in near-English

  5. Retirement & death • Retired from the Naval Reserve in 1966 with the rank of commander • Returned to active duty in the 1970’s • Promoted to rank of rear admiral (commodore) in 1983 • Oldest active-duty commissioned officer in the Navy at time of final retirement in 1986 • Consultant for Digital Equipment Corporation until her death in 1992 • Buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors

Recognition and awards • Computer Sciences Man of the Year Award – 1969 • Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society – 1971 – First American, first woman • Grace Murray Hopper Award for Outstanding Young Computer Professionals – ACM – est. 1971 • American Association of University Women Achievement Award – 1982 • Defense Distinguished Service Medal – 1986 • Computer History Museum Fellow Award – 1987 • National Medal of Technology – 1991 • USS Hopper (“Amazing Grace”) – launched 1996
