  2. Sentence / Word Bank • “Ferdinand,” cried Mercedes, “I believed (that) you were good-hearted, and I was mistaken!” • Word Bank: direct object (1), intransitive verb (2), noun of direct address (1), predicate adjective (2), subject (3), transitive verb (1)

  3. Compare • Compare your answers to your neighbor’s answers to see if you identified the same intransitive verbs. • “I labeled ________ as anintransitive verb because __________.”

Correct Answer • Ferdinand, I believed (that) you were good-hearted, and I was mistaken! • Ferdinand = noun of direct address (person being spoken to in a sentence) • I, you, I = subjects(the “who” or “what” of the verb) • were, was = intransitive verb (does not take a direct object) • good-hearted, mistaken = predicate adjective (follows linking verb and describes subject)

  5. Correct Answer • Ferdinand, I believed (that) you were good-hearted, and I was mistaken! • believed = transitive verb (takes a direct object) • that you were good-hearted = direct object (follows an action verb; think “subject, verb, what?”)
