Who Am I? • 1st year teacher in Bloomer, WI • I worked at a daycare all summer • Taught 7th grade remedial summer school in WR • I teach 1st Grade—got hired end of July • Had less than 3 weeks to get my classroom ready • Donny • Last Years Co-President of Student WEA • It gave me great connections within schools • Great talking points in interviews

  3. The Interview Process • Applying • WECAN • Finding them on the DPI job search link • School Websites • Need 3 letters of reference • Make sure to get one from each of your CT’s • You will answer specific questions to the desired location • Cover Letter-for each School • Resume

  4. Getting A Phone Call for an Interview • Connections with contacts from schools are key: Ways to do it • Elk Mound • Bowler • Wisconsin Rapids • Bloomer

Common Questions • Tell me about yourself and why you would be the best fit for our school. • Positives and Negatives • Diversity/Accommodations for students—reach all learners • How do you know a lesson went well? • Are you familiar with these programs? How would you teach them? • If you could map out a math lesson what would it look like? • Classroom Management—sometimes they would give situations • At the end of the interview-why is this school the place for you? What can you bring that other people cannot? • If a child could name you in five adjectives what would they be?

  6. How to use your big bad portfolio • Refer back to it while answering questions • Have them tagged, so you know where to refer—in addition to the standard tags • Some might give you the chance to pass it around! • Most interviews they will not give you an opportunity to do so • I found it very helpful to have with me at my interviews…and I didn’t think it would be as helpful as it was!

  7. Things you don’t think about • How long it takes to organize your room • Requisitions-getting supplies for room • Curriculum • Routines/procedures to run room • Behavior systems • Getting to know the school and how it runs • Everyday knowings…

  8. It is all worth it! • Make sure you are always prepared • The kids will make your day! • What are you doing this weekend? • Cameras in your house • Sock worksheet • Why do we come to school? • Microphone morning meeting • Farting in class • Boogers • Happy periods

  9. My little nuggets—it took fifteen pictures to get one that is somewhat normal!

  10. Questions • Any Student WEA questions? • Student teaching? • Block? • 1st Year teacher? • Interviews? • Try to remember you are still young and to have a life. • The professors are right you could stay in your classrooms all day and night
