What Is HIV/AIDS? • HIV- • HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a virus spread through bodily fluids. • Blood • Semen • Vaginal • Rectal secretions • HIV affects CD4 cells which are a part of the immune system . They destroy these cells. Once so many of these cells are destroyed HIV has progressed into AIDS. • AIDS- • AIDS or Acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome. Is a disease where there is a sever loss of the body’s cellular immunity. • Lowers the body’s defense system

  4. How it all began • SIV- • SIV or Simian Immunodeficiency Virus • Virus that infected chimpanzees in West Africa • like HIV caused CD4 (t-cells) loss and in some cases death

  5. CD4 Cells (T- Cells) • Your CD4 count need to stay around 500 cells/mm3 to 1,000 cells/mm3 to be considered normal • Once or before your CD4 count falls to about 350 cells/mm3 you should consider starting treatment for HIV. • HIV progresses to AIDS when your CD4 count drops below 200.

  6. Magic Johnson • Magic Johnson is a retired professional basketball player who has HIV. • He has had HIV for more that 20 years now. • There are people who have lived since 1980 with HIV • He does get treatment. But doctors believe he would still continue to progress without treatment.

  7. Freddie Mercury • Freddie Mercury was a British musician, singer, and songwriter. He had powerful vocals over a four-octave range. • He publically announced his fight against AIDS and died two days later from AIDS related pneumonia.

  8. HIV Pie Chart

  9. Conspiracy Theories • Homosexual and bisexual people who believe that HIV/AIDS is a government driven process are putting themselves at a greater risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. • 27% of African Americans believed that HIV/AIDS is a man-made virus to kill and wipe out blacks • 55% of Latinos and 50% of African Americans believed the government has a vaccine for HIV. • Over 30% of men and 24% of women believe that AIDS was produced in a government laboratory.

  10. How is HIV Spread? • HIV is transmitted during sexual activity, blood transfusions, and injection drug use. • HIV can also be transmitted from mother to child. • HIV will eventually progress into AIDS.
