  2. Eurasian Nomads • During the 11th Century, nomadic people began to raid, conquer, rule, and trade with the urban-based cultures

  3. What Made Them Successful? • Outstanding cavalry forces, skilled archers, and well-coordinated • Abilities to integrate vast territories

  4. Social Organization • Only two social classes: Noble and Commoner • Organized into clans and tribes

  5. Military Organization • Khan “ruler” organized groups of individual tribes for expansion • Outstanding skill on horseback and military power

  6. Making of a Mongol Empire • Genghis Khan unified the Mongol tribes • He organized military units and broke up tribes • Officials were chosen based on talent and loyalty

  8. The Mongol Empire • After the death of Genghis, the empire was spilt into regional empires

  9. Kubilai Khan • Consolidates the Mongol Empire in China • He is able to overthrow the Song Dynasty and starts the Yaun Dynasty in China

  10. Trade and the Mongol Empire • Due to commercial integration of the Mongol Empire trade will be greatly expanded • The traveler accounts of Marco Polo detailed the journey on the Silk Road • These stories of wealth made Europeans want to find easier routes to East Asia

  12. Trade and Disease • Exchange also spread disease. • The bubonic plague starts in China and spread due to Mongolian trade • The plague is carried by fleas and rats

  13. Trade and Disease • Typhus, influenza, and smallpox also traveled that same route • The combination of these diseases created the Great Pandemic of 1347-1352
