  2. Genghiz Khan • “The greatest joy in life is to conquer ones enemies, to pursue them, to seize their belongings, to see their family in tears, to ride their horses” • Genghiz Khan was born the son of a Mongol Clan leader • His father was, however, poisoned and Genghiz was taken prisoner • Genghiz never forgot the humiliation of defeat • It drove him to crush the clan which had killed his father and imprisoned him • It drove Genghiz to unify the Mongols into the most powerful army the world has ever seen

  3. The Golden Horde Lead by Genghiz Khan then by his grandson Batu the Mongol armies swept through eastern Europe conquering or killing everything in their path For the next 250 years Russia would be ruled by the Mongols While the Mongols were fierce warriors they were fairly tolerant rulers allowing the Russians to go about their daily lives The Mongols required the Princes to pay them large annual tributes and acknowledge them as overlords As long as they did this they were left alone

  4. Genghiz Khan Cont. • Under Genghiz Khan the Mongols would rule from Northern China to India and Russia • Once Genghiz unified the Mongols and conquered outer Mongolia he set his sights on conquering Asia’s greatest culture China • While Genghiz would not live to see his dream of conquering China his Grandson Kublai Khan would conquer China • His other Grandson Batu Khan would conquer Russia and India

  5. The Mongol Army • The Mongol Army was made up of the Mongolian horse nomads who inhabited the plains north of China • Every man was a warrior while the women tended the camps • Mongol Armies were fierce and merciless. In battle they killed without regard and took no prisoners • They could ride for days sleeping in their saddles

  6. Mongol Rule • Mongols ruled very passively • Required to pay tribute • Acknowledge as overlords • If you did these things you were mostly left alone • Placed Mongols only in ruling positions
