  2. Configuring GPON using ONT Management and Control Interface This modules covers Overview of OMCI SmartOMCI versus OMCI Using SmartOMCI ONT Functionality OMCI commands to manage ONTs

  3. OMCI, overview Different vendors exist in market place Existing deployment of ONTs: Customers currently have ONTs deployed. Swapping ONTs is not a practical task. Different customer preferences: Customers have changing requirements, making the need to be flexible to add newer services and ONT models to supported portfolio Managing ONTs should be seamless when adding new services Zhone uses standards based OMCI (G984.4) to manage ONT OLT uses OMCI to Configure ONT Obtain statistics/status information from ONT Supports alarms ONTs can be managed using ZMS, WebUI and CLI Zhone’s solution goes beyond the standards to provide Smart OMCI

  4. Benefits with SmartOMCI versus traditional management Smart OMCI from Zhone is the intelligence to allow OLT to interoperate with any ONT model Benefits Adding an ONT does NOT require OLT upgrade Adding new services does NOT require OLT upgrade Managing ONT is simple

  5. SmartOMCI, scenarios Add new ONT models (happens least frequently after initial rollout) Add new service plans (happens less frequently after initial rollout) Activate end users (ongoing event) Manage end-users (ongoing event)

  6. Creating a SmartOMCI file from www.zhone.com Service Provider decides services and ONT they want to support Use web tool from Zhone website to create ME profile file Import ME Profile file to MXK and create ME profile using ZMS, web GUI or CLI Create generic profile on MXK Create specific profile on MXK ME Once per ONT and service GENERIC Once per service! SPECIFIC Once per port!

  7. SmartOMCIprofiles and inheritance Defines supported services on an ONT model Defines a supported service plan Defines an end-user Manageable entity (ME) profile Generic profile bronze Generic profile silver Generic profile gold Specific profile 1-1-1 Specific profile 1-1-2 Specific profile 1-1-3 Specific profile 1-n-m

  8. SmartOMCI, parameters ME 2510-3P Manageable entity profile (per ONT and service) Unit type: ONT2510 Ethernet port #1 = GEM port 5xx; Ethernet port #2 = GEM port 9xx; POTS port 1 and 2 enabled using GEM port 7xx. Generic SILVER Generic profile (per ONT and service) Inherits all parameters from 2510-3P. In addition the profile specifies: VLAN 500 to Ethernet #1, VLAN 900 to Ethernet #2 and VLAN 700 for POTS, country code +44 for the POTS, SIP gateway address, SIP agent IP to DHCP and also SIP domain name. Specific profile (per ONT and service) Specific 1-1-1 Inherits all parameters from SILVER. In addition the profile specifies: SIP user name 101, SIP password 101 and SIP dial name 101.

  9. Managing and updating the SmartOMCI profile

  10. SmartOMCI With Smart OMCI customers can Manage ONTs Upgrade firmware on ONTs Reset ONTs Change status of ports on ONT Retrieve statistics/status from ONT Get alarm information from ONT on critical events ZMS, Web GUI and CLI support for managing ONTs

  11. ONT Functionality OMCI managed units – user configurable via OMCI profiles WebUI managed units – user configurable LEDs on CPE for remote troubleshooting

  12. OMCI commands to manage ONTs OMCI managed units View OMCI configuration states and alarms on ONU Retrieve status of GPON subscriber ports Administration of GPON subscriber ports Configure speed of GPON subscriber ports Configure tx/rx gain and fax parameters for POTS ports Manual upgrade on an ONU Automatic upgrade on an ONU View the ONU upgrade status Reboot an ONU Re-synchronize an ONU Add new services for subscriber without affecting existing services Retrieve alarm information on an ONU View or change trap reporting status on an ONU

  13. View OMCI configuration states and alarms on ONU View OMCI configuration states and alarms generated on an ONU with the gpononu status command. zSH> gpononu status 13/1/1

  14. Retrieve status of GPON subscriber ports From the MXK, the administrative state and operational state of subscriber facing ports on ONU can be retrieved by using the gpononu status command. The portType is based on what are supported by the ONU model. The possible port types could be eth (ethernet port), pots (POTS port), rf (RF port), and ces (T1/E1 port). This example shows the status of an ethernet port on ONU: zSH> gpononu status 5/1/1 port eth 1 5/1/1 ONU Port Status Ethernet Port Status - Port 1 Administrative State up Operational State active

  15. Configure speed of GPON subscriber ports By default the GPON ONU port speed of subscriber facing ports is set to auto-detect. You can modify this setting by using the gpononu auto-detect command: zSh> gpononu auto-detect <slot>/<olt>/<onu> portType <interface#> < auto | 10F | 100F | 1000F | 10H | 100H | 1000H | 10FA | 1000A >

  16. Configure tx/rx gain and Fax parameters for POTS ports The OMCI Transmit Gain, Receive Gain, and Fax Mode parameters can be set using the Smart OMCI Configuration Utility tool on the Zhone website (http://www.zhone.com/support/tools/omci) or by using the gpononu profiles update gen command.

  17. Manual upgrade on an ONU The OMCI image upgrade feature enables MXK user to manually upgrade firmware on an ONU immediately. Before downloading the image file to the ONU, make sure the image file exists in the MXK first. The OMCI standard defines two managed entities for firmware image, which are referred to as partitions 0 and partition 1. zSH> gpononu image 11/4/24 download-activate-commit 2510/2510.img Image "/card1/2510/2510.img" downloading to onu 11/4/24

  18. Automatic upgrade on an ONU The OMCI ONU auto upgrade feature allows MXK user to automatically upgrade ONUs which are installed with the outdated software images when they are ranging. Auto upgrading an ONU (or ONUs) Create an auto-upgrade template for an ONU modelusing new remote-sw-upgrade-profile 4 Verify ONU auto-upgrade is enabled usinggpononu auto-upgrade enable 15/1

  19. View the ONU upgrade status The ONU upgrade status for both auto-upgrade and manual upgrade per ONU can be viewed with the gpononu upgrade show command. zSH> gpononu upgrade show 11/4/2 ONU State Model Start Time Act Cmt Typ Part ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11/4/2 Complete 2510 OCT 01 19:37:39 2009 F F Auto 1

  20. Reboot an ONU Reboot the remote ONU from MXK with the gpononu reboot command. Reboot an ONU: zSH> gpononu reboot 13/4/2

  21. Re-synchronize an ONU Synchronize an ONU with the MXK with the gpononu resync command. This command causes the MXK to break and re-establish linkage with ONU, and send the latest OMCI commands to ONU. It could be used after an ME profile change. Re-sync an ONU: zSH> gpononu resync 13/4/2

  22. Add new services for subscriber without affecting existing services Adding new services to an existing subscriber does not require a resync of the ONU. For example, if a user has High Speed Internet Access (HSIA) on Ethernet port 1, and requests HSIA on Ethernet port 2, this can be achieved without doing a resync of the ONU by using the gpononu apply command. User can modify the Specific profile or Generic profile and issue the following command: zSH> gpononu apply 13/4/2

  23. Retrieve alarm information on an ONU Retrieve alarm information on an ONU View alarms that are internal to the ONU and ONU LAN facing port with the gpononu alarms command. zSH> gpononu alarms 13/4/2 13/4/2 ONU Active Alarms PptpEthUni 0x0402 LanLos PptpEthUni 0x0404 LanLos

  24. View or change trap reporting status on an ONU The conditions that cause asynchronous reporting traps can be controlled from the OLT through SNMP. The purpose of these controls is to reduce trap traffic between the MXK and ZMS to allow more information about critical or failing ONUs. zSH> gpononu traps show 13/4/2 Slot 13 olt 4 ONU Name PhysicalTraps OntTraps LineStatusTraps === ================= ============= ========= =============== 2 1-13-4-2 enabled disabled auto
