  7. Why did it spread ? Early 19th century events led to the growth of American manufacturing • Embargo of 1807 • War of 1812

  10. Interchangeable Parts • Eli Whitney’s idea • Each product made exactly the same

  11. The Rhode Island System • Entire families hired- children would get easier jobs

  12. Lowell System • Francis Cabot Lowell- produced thread and cloth under one roof • Hired young, unmarried women

  13. Protecting the rights of workers • 1830s and 40s unions began to form • Organization of artisans in a particular trade • Strikes-refused to work until their demands were met
