Goals of Presentation: • Introduce Key Terms • Diversity & Equity Office – Brief Overview • Fast Facts –WCSD Minority Students/Staff • Envision WCSD 2015 – Strategic Plan’s Intervention Strategy: • Foster a Diverse and Inclusive Culture (4.3) • Equity Alliance at Arizona State University (4.3.2) • “Beyond Diversity” Cultural Competency Workshop (4.3.3) • Training to Impact School Climate & Culture- Study Circles (4.3.4) • Increase the Diversity in Our Workforce (2.1.1 & 2.1.3)

  3. Key Terms • Diversity-valuing, adapting, acknowledging, and capturing individual differences to obtain a common goal; e.g., age, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origins, religion, cultural background etc. • Equity-the quality of being fair or impartial.

  4. Key Terms • Cultural Competence-isa set of behaviors, attitudes, skills and policies that enables one to work effectively in cross cultural situations. • Cultural Competency- a state of suitability in being cultural competent.

New Strategic Plan:Envision WCSD 2015 Objective 4.3 “Foster a Diverse and Inclusive Culture” • District Partnership – Equity Alliance at Arizona State University (4.3.2) • Federally funded research, technical assistance center will help: • develop a systemic approach in developing key strategies to assure all students success.

New Strategic Plan:Envision WCSD 2015 Objective 4.3 “Foster a Diverse and Inclusive Culture” District Partnership – Equity Alliance at Arizona State University (4.3.2) – Cont. • Facilitate dialogue groups at selected schools to identify specific areas effecting equitable educational access. • Principal’s will participate in “walk-throughs” to build equity practices in their schools. • Follow-up the District’s upcoming cultural competency training with facilitated action planning sessions .

New Strategic Plan:Envision WCSD 2015 Objective 4.3. “Foster a Diverse and Inclusive Culture” • A Cultural Competency Workshop (4.3.3) • “Beyond Diversity” by Glenn Singleton, co-author of Courageous Conversations About Race, Oct. 18-19. • All principals, board members, executive cabinet and some district administrators will attend. • A District “Equity Team” led by the Equity Alliance at ASU will facilitate follow-up sessions to develop action plans to embed policies and practices.

  15. New Strategic Plan:Envision WCSD 2015 Objective 4.3 “Foster a Diverse and Inclusive Culture” • Training for Schools to Positively Impact Climate and Culture (4.3.4) • Study Circles Program • Ongoing Diversity programming and activities

  16. Study Circles • Goal: To remove racial and ethnic barriers to student achievement and family engagement in Washoe County School District • During the 2009-2010 school year, six schools held a parent-staff Circle and three sessions where held with students only.

  17. Study Circles • Outcomes • Increased communication between parents and staff from different backgrounds. • Increased participation from parents of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. • Development of action plans to improve the academic performance of ethnic minority students. As a classroom teacher I was able to communicate with parents in a non-threatening environment. I was able to see their point of view on different issues. I have a lot of new ideas that I am excited to try. (Dodson ES)

New Strategic Plan:Envision WCSD 2015 Objective 2.1 “Attract, Recruit, and Hire the Most Qualified, Effective Personnel” • Increase the Diversity of the Workforce (2.1.1 & 2.1.3) • Increase the diversity of the applicant pool. • Recruitment will focus on increasing diversity and the number of bilingual and biliterate personnel and workforce. • Put into action the Diversity Scholarship Program for support educational professional (classified) and certified current employees.
