3. The European Union • 25 Mar 1957 – Treaties of Rome by the Six– Creation of the European Economic Community (EEC) – no tariff trade • 1 Jan 1973 – Denmark, Ireland and the U.K. join the EEC • 1 Jan 1981 – Greece joins the EEC • 1 Jan 1986 – Spain and Portugal join

7. The European Union • 1 Jan 2002 – The Euro becomes the only traded currency in the participating countries – by the end of 2002, only major nation of EU not using the Euro is the U.K. who remain with the British Pound (£) • All new members into the EU must adopt the currency.

The European Union • 28 Feb 2002 – Process to write a constitution that would govern the EU like a unified nation begins • 1 May 2004 – 10 new countries join the EU – the EU becomes the largest free trade economic bloc in the world. • 29 Oct 2004 – All national leaders sign the new Constitution for Europe

The European Union 29 May 2005 – French voters reject Constitution for Europe, therefore nullifying the Constitution – (nationalism reason for rejection) • 2 June 2005 – the Netherlands voters reject Constitution (also nationalism) • 1 January 2007 – Bulgaria and Romania join EU - takes total membership in the EU to 27 nations with 400 million people.

10. The European Union • 17 May 2007 – Euro (€) is the second most valued world currency behind the British Pound (£) and trading at 1.35 of the American dollar ($). These two are the only two currencies that the $ trades negatively with (the £ currently trades at 1.95).
