  1. Fleet Foxes, “Helplessness Blues” “I was raised up believing I was somehow unique Like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes Unique in each way you can see And now after some thinking I’d say I’d rather be A functioning cog in some great machinery Serving something beyond me But I don’t know what that will be …”

  2. The Power of the Individual More specifically, the insignificance of the individual in the face of circumstances beyond his control.

  3. The Simpsons

  4. Homerism “Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try.” -Homer J. Simpson, father, husband, American icon

  5. The Power of the Individual We definitely don’t want to follow Homer’s advice, and it would be a bummer if we all walked around like Grumpy Bear.

  6. The Power of the Individual And it’s probably not realistic that we can all be Sunshine Bear every single day of our lives. So how does the individual gain power in powerless situations?

  7. A River Runs Through It

  8. A River Runs Through It We are willing to help, Lord, but what, if anything, is needed? It’s true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don’t know what part of ourselves to give, or more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. And so it is those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them. We can love completely without complete understanding.

  9. The Power of the Individual The individual might face circumstances beyond his control, but he still retains some sense of power.

  10. John Mayer, “Split Screen Sadness” We share the sadnessSplit screen sadnessTwo wrongs make it all all right tonightAll you need is love isn’t like usWe had a love but we still said goodbyeNow we're tired, battered fightersAnd it stings when it's nobody's faultCause there's nothing to blame at the drop of your nameIt's only the air you took and the breath you leftMaybe I'll sleep inside my coat andWait on the porch 'til you come back homeOh, rightI can't find a flightSo I'll check the weather wherever you areCause I wanna know if you can see the stars tonightIt might be my only right

  11. The Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can;and wisdom to know the difference -Reinhold Niebuhr

  12. Emersonian philosophy “Life is a series of surprises, and would not be worth taking or keeping, if it were not. God delights to isolate us every day, and hide from us the past and the future.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Experience”

  13. The Power of the Individual Sometimes what seems like lack or loss of power might actually be an opportunity to appreciate the singular, unique, enchanting power of being a human being.

  14. Finding power in simplicity “We stumble on, thinks Jaslyn, bring a little noise into the silence, find in others the ongoing of ourselves. It is almost enough. Jaslyn thinks again of an apricot—she does not know why, but that’s what she thinks, the skin of it, the savor, the sweetness. The world spins. We stumble on. It is enough. The world spinning.” -Colum McCann, Let the Great World Spin

  15. The Avett Brothers, “Murder in the City” If I get murdered in the city Don’t go revenging in my name One person dead from such is plenty No need to go get locked away When I leave your arms The things that I think of No need to get over-alarmed I’m coming home

  16. The Avett Brothers, “Murder in the City” If I get murdered in the city Go read the letter in my desk Don’t bother with all my belongings But pay attention to the list Make sure my daughters know I love them Make sure their brother knows the same Always remember there is nothing worth sharing Like the love that let us share our name

  17. The Power of the Individual And so an individual is inherently powerful in the way he chooses to adapt himself to better understand and face the circumstance beyond his control.

  18. Works Cited You need a works cited entry for each text you include. Your humble instructor was pressed for time when prepared this model presentation, so he wrote an imaginary works cited page …
