Prussia, Austria and the German Confederation • Napoleon dissolved the Holy Roman Empire • German speaking people began to resent French rule • Napoleon’s defeat results in the meeting known as the Concert of Europe • The Congress of Vienna (headed by Metternich) create The German Confederation, a weak alliance headed by Austria.

Bismarck Unifies Germany • A member of the Junker (yoon-kur) Class, he was an old school Conservative (you know, Divine right of kings, etc.) • King William I of Prussia made Bismarck chancellor in 1862 • His “Blood and Iron” mentality would lead to the growth of state power and strengthening of the ruling Prussian dynasty • The Army is built up and prepared for war

WAR • Bismarck makes alliance between Austria and Prussia • Declares war on Denmark, seizes lands, then… • Makes an excuse to attack Austria!!! • Creates a new confederation dominated by Prussia • Allows Austria and 4 other German states to remain independent • France declares war on Prussia, but is defeated! Pay attention here…this guy is Hitler’s idol!

  7. VICTORY and a new Empire! • In the wake of victories, the German states encourage William I of Prussia to take the title of Kaiser (emperor)…will these people never learn? Come on!!, Caesar, Nero, Napoleon, OY! • 1871 German nationalists celebrate the birth of the SECOND REICH (empire) because they considered The Holy Roman Empire to be the 1st and Germany was the heir!
