Background • Written ~65 A.D. • Written by Paul – 1:1 Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ… • One of the pastoral epistles (1 & 2 Timothy, Philemon) • Not sure where Paul was when he wrote • 3:12 When I send Artemas to you, or Tychicus, be diligent to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there.

Background • Titus was converted by Paul • 1:4 To Titus, a true son in our common faith • 1 Corinthians 4:15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. • 2 Timothy 1:2 To Timothy, a beloved son

  4. Background • Titus was a gentile convert • Galatians 2:3 Yet not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. • He went with Paul from Antioch to Jerusalem for the Jerusalem council in Acts 15. • Acts 15:1-2, 12 • Galatians 2:1-10

Background • Titus carried the 1st Corinthian letter from Ephesus. • 2 Corinthians 7:6-8, 13-15 • He also carried the 2nd Corinthian letter and was to collect their gift for the needy in Jerusalem. • 2 Corinthians 8 • Shows his trustworthy and good character. • 2 Corinthians 8:23 If anyone inquires about Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker concerning you.

  7. Titus 1:1-4 Greeting • V. 1 Paul is a bondservant. So are we. • Romans 6:16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? • Paul is an apostle of Christ. • Acts 9:15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. • 1 Corinthians 14:37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. • 2 Peter 3:1-2 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,

Titus 1:10-16 The Elders’ Task • V. 10-11 those whose mouths must be stopped • 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ • V. 13 rebuke them sharply • 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

Titus 2:11-15 Trained By Grace • V. 11 God’s grace is available to ALL. • Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. • V. 12 God’s grace teaches us • 2 Peter 1:3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, • 2 Peter 2:20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.

Titus 2:11-15 Trained By Grace • V. 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. • Hebrews 9:27-28 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

  17. Titus 2:11-15 Trained By Grace • V. 14 We are saved by the sacrifice Jesus made for us. • Hebrews 9:22, Hebrews 10:4, 12 • V. 15 instruct them in their duty • Encourage them to do it • Rebuke the ones that won’t • Behave in such a way that you will be respected.

Titus 3:9-11 Avoid Dissension • V. 9 avoid foolish disputes • 2 Timothy 2:23 But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. • 2 Timothy 2:24-26 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses andescape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

Titus 3:9-11 Avoid Dissension • V. 10 Reject a divisive man • Romans 16:17-18 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. • Matthew 7:6 Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces. • Matthew 10:14 And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.
