  2. STREET VENDOR - definition 40 years back “A person who offers goods for sale to the public from door to door and on mobile carts”Today“A person who attracts people from door to door for the supply of cheap and easily available goods”

  3. REASONS • Urbanization • Shift from manufacture to the service industry • Lack of skills to cope up with the change Thus Increase in the self employed livelihood pattern

  4. DEFINATE LINKAGE with street vending activity • Growth of informal Settlements • Shortage of formal employment • Demand for cheap and quick goods • and services in towns

  5. STREET VENDING - as an occupation Positive aspects 60% Economic Contribution Service at low cost Easily approachable Downside Hindrance in city management Encroaching public spaces Effect on public sector revenue

  6. FACTS • Street vending is an outside activity, has • no place in a planned city • Formal market too costly for hawker and • can never hope to buy a shop in a regular • commercial center • City planners cannot imagine that • shopping could exist in any other way

FACTS…….Continued • But the vendors think otherwise and so do his • innumerable customers • vendors start their business without permission • on lands set aside for some other purpose and • often eat up into pedestrian spaces • Unlawful presence throws them open to frequent • harassment • Despite administrative vigor they find political • support and organize themselves to demand their • pound of flesh

  8. FACTS…….Continued • Slowly and grudgingly Municipal authorities have begun to tolerate them and give them daily tickets for business on unauthorized zones • with time court intervened with efforts to demarcating zones
