  1. The Coen Brothers

  2. Joel and Ethan coen • The brothers write, direct, and produce their movies together. • Ethan (left) and Joel (right)

  3. Frances mcdormand • Married to Joel • She has acted in six of their films. • Won an Academy Award for her role in Fargo.

  4. 1987 comedy • One of their earlier successes

  5. 1996 crime/drama/comedy • AA for Best Screenplay and Best Actress • Gene Siskel and Roger Ebertboth named Fargo the best movie of 1996. It was also Ebert's fourth favorite of the 1990s.In his original review, Ebert called it "one of the best films I've ever seen" and said that "films like Fargo are why I love the movies". • The plot involves a pregnant cop investigating a murder and a car salesman who hires two bungling fools to kidnap his wife.

  6. In the Coens' next big filmThe Big Lebowski, which was released in 1998, "The Dude" a Los Angeles slacker, is used as an unwitting pawn in a fake kidnapping plot with his bowling buddies). Well received by critics, it is now regarded as a classic cult film.

  7. Characteristics of style • The films feature stark contrast in lighting. • Coenbrothers' films combine dry humorwith sharp irony and shocking visuals, most often in moving camera shots. • Occasionally in their tracking shots they "rush" the camera forward; even when the camera is "static" it is often still drifting slightly. • Their style of characterisation creates a world in which even characters with small speaking parts seem to have exaggerated traits or characteristics. • The typical theme is of people being in over their heads working on a scheme. • They often include kidnapping and misunderstandings.

  8. Depictions of america • They often depict exaggerated stereotypes of a region or state, and the character of the place itself is integral to the movie. • Raising Arizona • Fargo (Minnesota) • Big Lebowski (LA) • No Country for Old Men (TX / Mexico border)

  9. Common motifs that the Coens ‘window-dress’ their films include: • Howling Fat Men • Vomiting • Violence • Dream Sequences • Peculiar haircuts
