  1. The Brothers Grimm Kassandra (Ms. Cassandra Noblin)

  2. The Grimm Family • Philipp and Dorothea Grimm • Eight sons and one daughter. • Friedrich, Jacob, Wilhelm, Carl, Ferdinand, Ludwig, Friedrich, Charlotte and Georg. • Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm • Later known as the Brothers Grimm.

  3. How They Started • At the ages of 13 and 14, Jacob and Wilhelm move to Kassel. • Both attend the University of Marburg, at the ages of 17 and 19. • Studied law. • Began to collect folktales in the early 1800’s.

  4. About Their Stories • Dorothea Viehman and two Huguenot families told the brothers tales. • Jacob and Wilhelm held different interests regarding folktales. • More than just collecting fairy tales and folk legends. • They had a favorite local storyteller named Marie Muller.

  5. More About Their Stories • Publish first collection in 1812. • Contains 86 folktales. • Two years later, a second volume is published. • Adds 70 more folktales. • In another two years, two volumes of Deutsche Sagen is published.

  6. Following the Stories • Brothers receive honorary doctrates. • Wilhelm marries. • Both begin work at the University of Göttingen. • Joined in protest against King Ernest Augustus of Hanover. • Moved back to Kassel. • Accept jobs at the University of Berlin.

  7. More About Jacob • Born January 4, 1785, in Hanau, Germany. • Studied law out of duty, not because he loved it. • Director of the Westphalian king’s private library. • Also the auditor of the Council of State.

  8. Grimms Law • Named after Jacob Grimm • Also known as the First Germanic Sound Shift. • The first non-trivial systematic sound change to be discovered in linguistics. • Deutsche Grammatik, formulated the law as a general rule.

  9. More About Wilhelm • Born February 24, 1786, in Hanau, Germany. • During four years of high school, suffered scarlet fever attacks and asthma. • Confined to bed for half a year, health became worse. • Studied Norse literature on his own.

  10. Some Of The Most Popular Stories • Cinderella • Snow White • Little Red Riding Hood • Rapunzel • Rumpelstiltskin • Hansel and Gretel • Sleeping Beauty

  11. Disney VS Grimms • Everyone knows the classic stories. • Stories differ drastically, others only slightly. • Disney more “kid friendly” • Grimms stayed true to the spoken legends. • More morbid and grim (pun intended).

  12. The End • Wilhelm Grimm dies December 16, 1859, at the age of 73. • Jacob Grimm dies September 20, 1863, at the age of 78. • Leave behind the best collection of German fairy tales and folk legends of the time.
