Backround • Attitudes and believes of going abroad have been changed, even among disabled people themselves • International exchange has become a normal part of studying • However only few students with disabilities go to exchange during their studies • HEIs have often little information, what kind of things have to be taken into consideration, when student with disabilities go to abroad

  3. CIMO & Accessibility • Centre for International Mobility CIMO: • promoting international mobility and cooperation by providing expertise and services • implementing various exchange, trainee and scholarship programmes, functioning as the National Agency for all LLP-programmes in Finland • organization under the Finnish Ministry for Education and Culture • Strategy 2020 goal: CIMO promotes equal opportunities to participate in international cooperation and actively fights inequality • Internal working group to promote accessible international mobility in higher education was founded in 2011

Action! • Grants: • Accessibility grants were introduced to all higher education mobility programmes administered by CIMO • Check List: • Accessibility and International Student Mobility - Check List for Exchange Students and Higher Education Institutions • Leaflet • Video • Dialogue with various stakeholders: • HEIs: international coordinators • ESOK Inclusive Higher Education – project: disability coordinators • Nordic Network for Disability Coordinators (NNDC)

  5. Accessibility and International Student Mobility - Check List • Start the preparations for the exchange in goodtime • Differences in • National legislation and services for people with disabilities • Regulations and practicesbetweenHEIs • Culturaldefinitions for disability/accessibility

Accessibility and International Student Mobility - Check List • Takecare of accessibility in yourown HEI • Giveinformation • aboutaccessibility and servicesalso to exchangestudentsactively • in accessibleformat • in English/otherlanguages • Find out the possibities to supportstudent in accessibilityissues • Describe, whatkind of informationyour HEI needsfrom the exchangestudent, for example for accomodations and askadditionalinformationfromthe student, whenneeded Crucial: make sure the student is notleftalone with the preparations
