  5. Specials • We have a 4 week block rotation. • Specials include PE, music, and art. • The students schedule will change each week. We will let them know on Monday, which Specials they have for the week. Please make sure the wear proper shoes on PE days

  6. Library Schedule • Friday—Weekly checkout • Students will be encouraged to check out Accelerated Reader books for nightly reading. • They are allowed to check out 2 books. Both must be brought back on time in order to check new books out.

Reading Workshop • 3rd graders are reading to learn rather than learning to read! • Balanced literacy approach: • Read alouds with accountable talk • Guided reading groups: small groups formed based on reading levels with the teacher • Reading on their own: “just right” books, stop and jot, expanding vocabulary • Encouraged to justify their thoughts citing text evidence (reading responses)

  9. Language • Capitalization • Punctuation • Grammar • -parts of speech • Sentence Patterns • Usage • Written Composition: Organized writing

Writer’s Workshop • Ideas-the main theme • Organization-sequence, organize and group • Voice-the feeling of the writer coming out through the words • Word choice-the use of rich, colorful words • Sentence fluency-the way in which the writing plays to the ear • Conventions-the mechanical correctness • Writing Process: Prewrite-Draft-Revise-Edit-Conference-Publish

Spelling • Monday- patterns/words are introduced • Review throughout the week • Friday spelling tests • Tests will consist of weekly words • Sentence dictation will consist of five sentences every three weeks and count for a daily grade. It will be a review of words from the prior weeks. • Use spellingcity.com as a way to practice at home (link is on my website)

  12. How is spelling and vocabulary graded? • All of the Spelling tests will total for 10% of the total writing grade. • Sentence dictation will count for a writing daily grade. • Vocabulary tests will count for a reading daily grade.

  14. Math • In 3rd grade, students will be assessed on their math fact fluency on a regular basis as required by the TEKS for their grade level. Weekly assessments will be taken and the average of those weekly assessments will account for 1/2 of a major grade for students for the nine weeks(approximately 10% of the students grade per nine weeks).This ½ of a major grade will be in addition to the 3 major grades taken in each nine weeks. • Practice math facts nightly (addition, subtraction) **mathfactcafe.com**

  15. Math Pearson Realize gives students access to the third grade math and science textbooks online. They can play math games, complete assignments and read the textbook. Each student has access at home. This information is on my webpage

  18. Discipline BE RESPECTFUL TO SELF, OTHERS, and PROPERTY! • Positive Discipline • Conduct Marks for discipline issues reported via email and in your HAC • Daily concerns will be noted in student’s planner

  19. New Behavior Targets CONDUCT GRADES - ALL SUBJECTS Grades K-5 (Elementary) Behaviors that Support Learning 3 = ​Proficient​. Follows expectations independently. 2 = ​Approaching​. Progressing toward expectations. 1 = ​Needs Suppor​t. Needs reminders and support to follow expectations.

  20. This year we will implement a new Behavioral Learning Target System. This will replace the old E, S, N, U. This new system will give you a better, more defined look of what is happening in the classroom and give you immediate feedback on any incident which may take place. Here are the 4 Learning Targets Demonstrate Self-Control Demonstrate Respect for Others Demonstrate Readiness to Learn Demonstrate Responsibility Each learning target will receive its own number grade and they are as follows…….

  21. Grades A= 100-90 B= 89-80 C= 79-75 D= 74-70 F= 69 and below

More on Grades • Major and Daily Grades • 2nd – 4th Grade Academic Grades-Minimum per 9 Weeks • MAJOR​ ​= 50% of nine week average Reading = 2 major grades Writing = 2 major grades Math = 3 major grades Science = 2 major grades Social Studies = 2 major grades • DAILY​ ​= 50% of nine week average Reading = 3 daily grades Writing = 3 daily grades Math = 6 daily grades Science = 4 daily grades Social Studies = 4 daily grades

Homework • Students will receive weekly math homework, as needed. • Homework is due Friday to Mrs. Guynes • Students will receive spelling words for the following week on Friday. • Vocabulary words will be given two weeks prior to the test. • Students are expected to read for 20 minutes daily. • Homework will be given at the discretion of the teacher. When it is given, they will bring it home on Friday and it will be due the following Friday. • Students will fill out their planners each Friday will information for the following week.

  24. Discuss your child’s reading! • Ask questions about their reading • Comprehension questions • Vocabulary • Cause/Effect • Be creative • Start a reader response journal

  25. Boomerang and Wednesday Folders • School and Home communications • Progress Reports every Wednesday in Wednesday Folder • Sign and return progress reports/papers • Send notes/lunch money with your student. • Check nightly and remove papers. • Clean out backpacks on a regular basis

  26. Attendance • Call or e-mail if student is absent • If your child is absent, you must send or fax in a signed note within 2 days for it to be excused. Doctor’s notes are also appreciated. If your child is absent more than 5 days, a doctor’s note is required. • Early dismissals and tardies will count against perfect attendance

  27. General Information • Birthday snacks—Ice Cream passes/ Store bought treats (Last 10 minutes of lunch) • Healthy snacks and water bottles; No candy, chips, cookies, or messy snacks. • Transportation changes must be made in writing or fax with your id, signed by parent, and submitted by 3:10p.m. Follow-up faxes with a phone call. • Sign and return progress report & report cards

  28. Cell Phones and Smart Watches Parents, With the increase in the technology through phones and watches, we would like to make you aware of the expectations on all elementary campuses: Cell phones shall remain silenced and in a backpacks, unless the classroom teacher authorizes use for instructional purposes. Cell phones shall not be used during non-instructional time periods including lunch and recess. Our preference is no cell phones or watch phones on elementary campuses due to the possibility of disruption or loss of the items.  However, if it is necessary outside the school day, it should remain in the backpack turned off.
