Welcome to Parent Night: Spanish Language Class Overview and Success Strategies

Join us for Parent Night as Mr. Varini presents the goals of our Spanish 1 and 2 classes. Our aim is to expose students to new languages and cultures, broadening their worldviews in preparation for a diverse society. With Hispanic representation projected to grow from 16% to 25% by 2050, learning Spanish is more important than ever. We will discuss essential strategies for student success, including organization, study skills, and active participation. Learn about class structure, assessment methods, and how parents can support their children’s learning journey.

  1. Welcome to Parent Night! Mr. Varini Spanish 1 & 2

  2. Goals in Foreign language class Expose students to a new language/culture to broaden their world view and prepare them for a multi-cultural/multi-lingual society! According to the 2010 US census, 16% of the population is Hispanic. By 2050, the country will be around 25%. Prepare students for college by helping them develop the organizational and study skills that are necessary

  3. How to be successful – in class -Bring all materials to class (notebook, pen/pencil) *Books and workbooks stored in classroom -participate actively -keep an organized notebook -have a positive attitude -ask questions/ask for help

  4. How to prepare at home Study vocabulary and/or grammar notes each day (It is difficult to be successful if you try to have a “cram” session right before a quiz/test) Do online conjuguemos vocabulary practice *New set up (divided into smaller groups of words)

  5. When is extra help available? Monday/Wednesday: 2:40-4:00 PM Tuesday/Thursday: 7:00-7:40 AM *Or almost any day before/after school by appointment

  6. Structure of a typical unitSpanish 1 Realidades 1 - Chapter 1B Vocabulary theme – Describe yourself and others Grammar focus – Adjective agreement, definite and indefinite adjectives, sentence structure and word placement

  7. Structure of a typical unitSpanish 2 Realidades 2 - Chapter 1B Vocabulary theme – What do you do after school? Grammar focus – making comparisons, saber/conocer, hace+time expressions

  8. Assessment opportunities 20% - Quizzes - vocabulary recognition/grammar 30% - Tests - vocabulary production/grammar/listening 10% - Homework/Daily work assignments 10% - Performance essay (1 per semester) 30% - Benchmark Tests (3 per semester)

  9. Foreign Language Benchmark Tests 30% - Speaking (Question/Answer) 70% - Multiple choice *Cumulative test – covers all material studied up to that point
