  2. Environmental considerations for Natural Selection • Survival is often based on the traits present within an environment. • Some traits can be seen to be selected for over time if environmental constraints act on those traits.

  3. Adaptations • Organisms best suited for their environment pass on their genes to the next generation • Ex. Moth coloration (Ketterwell) • Ex. Panda’s thumb • Changes in the frequency of traits over generations can be explained by violating the Hardy-Weinberg Rules (next week)

  4. Order: Primates • Characteristics: hands & feet for grasping; relatively large brains • Suborder: Prosimii • lemurs, tarsiers • Suborder: Anthropoidea • monkeys, apes, humans (opposable thumb) • Paleoanthropology: study of human origins

  5. How useful is your thumb? • Today’s investigation looks at every day tasks and the use of the opposable thumb in doing those tasks.
