  2. SPOT THE DIFFERENCE There are supposed to be 10 differences between the two pictures! When you play a game of “Spot the Difference” you use the detail in the pictures to help you.

  3. Why are details important? What is a detail? • A detail is additional information about the topic you are reading about. The heading of the passage will usually give you the topic. • Details help you visualize what a writer is describing. Being able to recall details helps you improve your other reading skills.

  4. Trees that walk! • There are trees that really “walk”. They grow in Florida. These trees have long roots that reach out like legs. As the roots grow out, they pull the tree along. • There are at least four details about the walking tree in this short paragraph: • There are trees that walk • They grow in Florida • That have long roots that reach out like legs • The roots pull the tree along

  5. How to read for detail.... • When you are reading for detail it is not the same as reading a story or newspaper just for fun – you need read more slowly, and you may need to try and figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words. • Don’t forget to always look at the title and the topic sentence of the paragraph! • Usually each sentence contains at least one detail. • When you use the details, you shouldn’t refer back to the passage! this is one of the differences between a good reader and a great reader!

  6. The Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty is a large copper statue. It was given to the United States by France in 1884 as a symbol of friendship. It is also a symbol of the liberty that people enjoy under the United States government. The statue stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbour. • Re-read the paragraph and in pairs (without looking at the text), write down at least four details about the Statue of Liberty.

  7. The Simpsons Now the longest-running comedy in television history, THE SIMPSONS immediately struck a chord with viewers across the country as it poked fun at itself and everything in its wake. With its subversive humour and delightful wit, the series has made an indelible imprint on American pop culture, and the family members have become television icons.
