  5. The Election • Jefferson picks Aaron Burr to be his running mate • Jefferson and Burr tie at 73 Votes in the Electoral College, Adams gets 65 • Election must be decided by the House of Representatives

  6. The House of Representatives • Hamilton and the Federalists control the House • He hates Adams, hates Jefferson more, and hates Burr even more! • House deadlocks and ties for 35 straight votes!

  7. Hamilton’s Fateful Decision • House must choose between Burr and Jefferson • Burr really should step aside as he is the vice-presidential candidate • Burr decides to take a shot at becoming president

  8. Hamilton’s Fateful Decision • Hamilton decides to pick Jefferson on 36th Ballot • Jefferson is the lesser of two evils in Hamilton’s view • “I would rather have Jefferson, a man with wrong principles, than Burr…a man with no principles at all.” –Alexander Hamilton
