ScientificMethodandExample Experiment Mr. Loth’s 7th Grade Created by Mr. Whittaker
Scientific Method 1. Define the PROBLEM. 2. Conduct RESEARCH. 3. Make a HYPOTHESIS. 4. Conduct an EXPERIMENT. 5. Collect the DATA. 6. Draw a CONCLUSION.
Scientific Method The Problem: • Needs to be in the form of a question? • “What camera takes better digital pictures a Cannon or a Nikon?” • “Do people prefer Mt. Dew, Pepsi, or Sprite?”
Scientific Method Research: • Make observation to gain more information • Go online • Library Books • Magazines • Interviews
Scientific Method Hypothesis: • A (scientific) guess based on your research. • I think Cannon cameras will take better pictures. • I think more people like Mt. Dew over Pepsi and Sprite.
Scientific Method Experiment: • Design a test to help determine the answer. • Variables • Independent – what we are measuring (height, speed) • Dependent – A unit of measurement (mph, inch.) • Control Group - stays the same • Use both cameras to take the same shot, develop the pictures, compare the clarity and color. • Conduct a taste testing between the two sodas.
Scientific Method Experiment (con’t.) Independent variable – What are we changing for each experiment. • Ex. Three different soda brands (Mt. Dew, Pepsi, Sprite) Dependent variable – A unit of measurement (mph, inch.) what we are measuring (height, speed, distant, votes, time) Control variables- must stay the same throughout the experiment. • Ex. Same temp. of soda, same person drinking, same type (not diet)
Scientific Method Data: • What are your results from your experiment? Make aTABLE (T-Chart), then make aGRAPH Independent Variable Soda Brand Dependent Variable Number of votes Mt. Dew Pepsi Sprite 15 votes 10 votes 8 votes
Scientific Method Conclusion: • Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect? What are the facts? What have you proven? • My hypothesis was correct Mt. Dew was picked by more people over Pepsi and Sprite. #1
Example Experiment Breaking down an science experiment into spart.
Ex. 1 Kyle rolls a bowling ball 45 meters, he rolls a softball 60 meters, and he rolls a golf ball 80 meters. • a. independent variable • b. dependent variable • c. a control ball types meters rolled Kyle, surface, force, measuring tool
Kyle rolls a bowling ball 45 meters, he rolls a softball 60 meters, and he rolls a golf ball 80 meters. • d. give hypothesis • e. make a data table • f. make a graph If Kyle rolls a big ball, then it doesn’t roll very far. SEE NEXT SLIDE
