The temple has been in use for over 22 centuries and still holds a sense of benevolence and spirituality
The tradition has it that some of the caves were excavated by king VattagamaniAbhaya in the first century B. C. It can be surmised that this king and his successors, in benefaction to this place had to enlarge and smoothen the caves, and cut the drip-ledge (katarama) along the rock to protect the caves from rain water.
Ca în orice templu şi aici se intră desculţ (şi fără pălărie) At the entrance, we were obliged to put off our shoes and put them to the “Shoes Care Service” for a fee. If you left your shoes just anywhere, you would risk them to be stolen by some monkey

The cave contains, another five images of which the standing one at the southern end of the room is supposed to be that of ArhatAnanda, the immediate disciple of Buddha, weeping at the death of his master. Although there are wall and ceiling paintings in this cave, these can hardly be seen as a result of damage done by the incense burnt by devotees.
At the northern corner of the cave, opposite the face of the principal image, there is a statue, of Visnu, (some scholars believe that this is of Upulvan, one of the four guardian deities of Sri Lanka), which is a well executed
