  1. Azerbaijan 9 Martyrs' Lane, Baku

  2. Martyrs' Lane, Alley of Martyrs or ShehidlerKhiyabani, formerly The Kirov Park, is a cemetery and memorial in Baku, dedicated to those killed by the Soviet Army during Black January and later to those killed in Nagorno-Karabakh War. It's estimated that about 15,000 people are buried in the cemetery. It is located on a hill in the south of the city and offers views of the Caspian Sea. Thousands visit the shrine to pay their respects to those who had given their lives for Azerbaijan's independence

  3. High up on the crest of Baku's highest hill in the south of the city, the building of National Assembly of Azerbaijan

  4. The Flame Towers — a trio of 30-storey towers completed in 2012

  5. The Flame Towers — a trio of 30-storey towers completed in 2012 — were designed to resemble tongues of fire that glow red and gold in the evening, washed with flickering light evoking a giant bonfire. Located atop a hill on the Caspian Sea overlooking Baku Bay and the old city center, the three towers were inspired by Azerbaijan’s ancient history of fire worshipping, and will illuminate the city and act as an eternal flame for modern Baku. The goal of the project was to create a low-resolution media façade to display video content, while integrating inconspicuous lighting fixtures into existing architecture

  6. The Flame Towers are completely covered with the LED screens that display the movement of a fire visible from the farthest points of the city

  7. The 39-story residential tower — the tallest of the three — sits to the south, accommodating 130 luxury apartments with stunning views. The hotel, operated by Fairmont Hotels, is located on the northern corner of the site and consists of 318 rooms over 36 floors. Located on the west side of the complex, the office tower provides more than 33,000 square meters of flexible, Class A commercial office space. The retail podium acts as the anchor for the project, providing leisure and retail facilities for the three towers’ residents and visitors

  8. The Funicular Railway has been completed in May, 2012, just in time for the Eurovision Songcontest. According to some articles, they only had 1 year time for planning and building this inclinator that moves its visitors right up to the Mertyr Hill and the Sehidler Xiyabani Tower

  9. The Funicular is open 10am to 10 pm (You can take the little tram ride up the side of the hill to reach the spot for 20cents) The funicular leaves every about 15 minutes.

  10. Martyrs' Lane is also home to Baku Turkish Martyrs' Memorial, the large memorial to the 1,130 Turkish troops, which were killed while fighting Bolshevik and Armenian forces in the Battle of Baku in 1918.

  11. Next to the memorial there is a Martyrs mosque also built by Turks

  12. The site first served as former Muslim cemetery, where they buried the bodies of victims of the March Events of 1918 which was a part of the localized fighting of the Russian Civil War. The cemetery was completely destroyed and the corpses removed from there after the Bolsheviks came to power, which created an amusement park and installed a statue of Sergei Kirov, the prominent Bolshevik leader

  13. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the statue as well as park amusement facilities were removed and the location was reinstated as a burial site for national heroes

  14. Some of its first men who were honoured by the newly instated memorial were those that died during Black January events of 1990 when Soviet forces invaded Baku

  15. The first tomb in the entrance of Martyrs' Lane belongs to married couple Fariza and IlhamAllahverdiyev who died during Black January.

  16. Ilham was shot dead by Soviet troops and Fariza committed a suicide in two attempts after hearing about the death of her husband

  17. Today, for the Azerbaijani youth their tomb become a symbol of fidelity and love, while every year the tomb visited by the crowds of lovers
