  2. House Un-American Activities Committee • In 1947 the HUAC interviewed 41 people about the suspicion of communism in Hollywood • These 41, were called “The Friendly Witnesses” • They named 19 people with left wing views, communists, “Un-Friendly Witnesses”

  3. The Blacklist • 10 of those 19 refused to answer questions and became The Hollywood Ten • The courts found all ten men guilty of contempt of congress • Each were sentenced between six and twelve months in prison

  7. John Howard Lawson • Born September 1894, died August 1977 • Least famous of the Hollywood 10 • Founder of the Writers Guild of America

  8. Lester Cole • Born June 1904, died August 1985 • Began writing and directing plays in the 20’s and 30’s • He acted in movies such as Painted faces but was mainly known for his screenwriting • Organized the Screen Writers Guild

  9. Edward Dmytryk • Born September 1908, died July 1999 • He directed 6 different actors in Oscar-nominated performances • “My lifelong ambition has been to spend my money as soon as I get it”

  10. Ring Lardner Jr. • Born August 1915, died October 2000 • Won an Academy Award for M*A*S*H in 1970

  11. Albert Maltz • Born October 1908, died April 1985 • Oscar-nominated Screenwriter • Wrote novels and short stories

  12. Samuel Ornitz • November 1980, died March 1957 • Writer, 1923 “Haunch, Paunch and Jowl” • Tried screenwriting, but never had the same success as his novels

  13. Adrian Scott • Born February 1912, died December 1973 on Christmas • Producer and Screenwriter • Produced the “gritty masterpiece,” Crossfire in 1947 • Nominated for 5 Academy Awards

  14. Dalton Trumbo • Born December 1905, died September 1976 • The most famous and talented of the Blacklisted • Wrote or produced over 67 movies

The End • After the ten blacklisting continued in Hollywood • Over 300 more writers, screenwriters, and producers were blacklisted • The blacklisting ended after Otto Preminger announced in January of 1960 that he would give Dalton Trumbo screenwriting credit for “Exodus” • Even after the blacklist took more than two years to completely disappear.
