  12. With Deliverance Comes New Identity Egypt NOT-Egypt

  13. Exodus 3:7-10 Then YHWH said, “I have seen the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them. So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.”

  14. Deliverance A Change in “Land” ”That land” New Land The best in human experience A good and spacious land Flowing with milk and honey The worst in human experience • Misery • Suffering • Slavery • “parekh” • Rigor • harsh treatment

  15. A New Identity (19:4-6) “You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possessions out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.”

  16. With Deliverance comes a New Identity Old identity New Identity Treasured possession of YHWH A kingdom of Priests Gain in identity: A “holy” nation • Enslaved by Egypt • Indebted / Burdened • Loss in Identity

  17. The Ten WordsDeliverance and New Identity To you there are no other gods No idols No lifting up the name of YHWH to emptiness Remember the Sabbath and keep it separate (holy) Honor Father and Mother No murder No stealing No adultery No bearing false witness Do not covet

  18. The “New” Identity To you there are no other gods No idols No lifting up the name of YHWH to emptiness Remember the Sabbath and keep it separate (holy) Honor Father and Mother No murder No stealing No adultery No bearing false witness Do not covet

  20. First Commandment You shall have no other gods before me. Possible readings: • For/to you there are no other gods • No other god may be placed alongside YHWH • No other god may take the place of YHWH • No other god may be set against YHWH

  21. You shall not… • Clarifies the commitment of Israel to YHWH • Marks the boundary between inside / outside of the Israelite-YHWH identity, relationship and its working out in Israelite society • Creates a choice between two opposing ways of being / acting

  22. What if we “read” from the bottom Up? To you there are no other gods No idols No lifting up the name of YHWH to emptiness Remember the Sabbath and keep it separate (holy) Honor Father and Mother No murder No stealing No adultery No bearing false witness Do not covet

  23. What if we “read” from the bottom Up? there are other gods idols lifting up the name of YHWH to emptiness Forget the Sabbath and not keep it separate (holy) Dis-Honor Father and Mother No murder No stealing No adultery No bearing false witness Do not covet
