  1. Desensitized to sin? • Violence • Sex • Anti-legalism • Confession of sin • Agreement with the Bible

  2. Jesus is our New Covenant Sacrifice (“The blood of Jesus”) Old Covenant Sacrifice: • Unblemished animal • Take the animal to the temple and present it to the priest • Place your hands on the animal’s head and confess your sins • Watch as the priest would slit the animal and it’s blood would be shed for your sins

  3. Problems with the Old Covenant: • It was insufficient to forgive sins – Hebrews 10:4 • People could go through the motions outwardly and not truly repent of their sins, worship, and love God in their hearts – Psalm 51:16-17 • It was preparing and anticipating the coming of a New Covenant – John 1:29 The New Covenant – Jesus sheds His blood as the Lamb of God and High Priest who atones for our sins and brings us into this New Covenant (Hebrews 9:11-14)

  4. Jesus is our Propitiation (Satisfies God’s Wrath) God’s holiness and sin: Does God get angry at sin? Does God hate sin? Does God hate sinners? What is the result? God’s Wrath (Rom 1:18, Col 3:5-6) – Passive (Rom 1:24) and Active (Acts 12:22-23) Jesus, on the Cross satisfied God’s wrath by taking it upon Himself – this is Propitiation (Romans 5:8-9, 1 John 4:9-10)

  5. How can we respond to Jesus as our New Covenant Sacrifice and Propitiation? • Warning – John 3:36 • Worship and Deep Gratitude • Conviction and Confession of Sin – 1 John 1:8-9 • Pursue Holiness – Romans 8:13, 1 Peter 1:13-16
