Al Qaeda: • Goal: To spread militant Sunni Islam worldwide and oppose democracy • Leader: (was) Osama bin Laden • Core Membership: 1000s • Factions all over world • Formed 1988 after Soviet-Afghanistan war • Worldwide training camps • Trains Islamic & ethnic guerilla jihadists to commit acts of terrorism, organized complex attacks on countries it sees opposing it

  4. 1980s al Qaeda increased terrorist attacks • Result of 9/11 attacks • International and domestic intelligence services • Security of borders • Military action (2001 U.S.-led military campaign invaded Afghanistan and forced out the Taliban government)
