  3. Naviance Account Codes • Log into Family Connection: www.connection.naviance.com/hisd-lamar • Username: HISD student ID • Password: 8 digit date of birth in MMDDYYYY format with no slashes or dashes

  4. Graduation Requirements • 4 credits in English, math, science and social studies • 2 credits of a Language • 1 credit PE • .5 credit in Health • 1 credit Fine Art • 5.5 credits in Electives TOTAL: 26 credits

  5. Health • Ninth graders currently taking Biology will get concurrent credit for Health. This will appear as a Period 9 class on the spring schedule and will appear on the transcript at the end of the semester • If your student took Biology in the 8th grade for high school credit, health will have to be taken as a separate course. Summer school is the best option for this.

Graduation Requirements Passing STAAR exams in English 1 & 2, Biology, Algebra 1, and US History All Lamar students are scheduled into the Distinguished Level of Achievement Program • More competitive for college admission • Can be admitted to public 4 year colleges in Texas under the top 10% law

  7. Graduation Requirements Students move into the next course in sequence and if needed, deficiencies are made up online at home, in summer school or in Grad Lab when available College recruited athletes should make up NCAA core courses by correspondence with the University of Texas

Graduation Requirements The Distinguished Level of Achievement Program requires 26 credits and includes an endorsement An endorsement is a related series of courses grouped by an interest or skill which provide in-depth knowledge of a subject area It is a pathway with a sequence of courses selected in 9th grade

  9. Endorsements All students completing the Distinguished Achievement Program automatically complete the Multidisciplinary Endorsement because of additional math, science and elective credits

  15. Top 10% Rule Students who graduate in the top 10% of their class are guaranteed admission into any state supported college in Texas except… UT Austin historically takes top 7 – 8% Bonus grade points for Advanced Academics help get students there

A NACAC survey of members (64% private, 36% public) said these were very important factors influencing admission decisions: • 84% Grades in College Prep classes • 54% Admission test scores (SAT, ACT, etc.) • 42% Grades in other subjects • 42% Other criteria specific to each institution • 32% Class rank • 18% Essay/writing sample

  37. What colleges want… • Above all, they look for a strong record in difficult classes • An improving transcript is better than one in decline • Take more math, science & language classes • Improve communication skills • Get involved in outside activities
