  2. Why is the process of selecting courses important?

  3. Course selection is important because.. • Exploring and developing your interests. • Taking honors and/or Advanced Placement courses is the best way to show colleges that you are challenging yourself. • Future planning – some courses require a pre-requisite. • For example, if you would like to take AP Java during junior year and Game Programming during senior year. You MUST take Introduction to Computer Science next year.

  4. Timeline for Course Selection • February 13th – You received your permanent record in official class. • KEEP THE ORIGINAL AND DO NOT LOSE IT. MAKE COPIES IMMEDIATLEY. IT IS NOT EASY TO GET A REPLACEMENT. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE A COPY OF YOUR PERMANENT RECORD IN YOUR BOOKBAG. • February 28th: Naviance opens for viewing • March 3rd – Elective Day 9th-11th period. • Application Period: Due Date March 10th • March 17th – Registration opens on Naviance. • March 28th at 3pm: Registration closes on Naviance EVERYONE NEEDS TO REGISTER!!

Selection Criteria • Selection for special permission courses consist of the following criteria. • Check Department Websites for Selection Criteria Information. • Grades (both 1st semester and 2nd semester grades) • Just because you get accepted in March doesn’t mean you will be in the class when we return to school in the fall. • Teacher Recommendations • Attendance/Cutting . All cuts must be cleared. • Students with suspended privileges are not allowed to have Special Permission classes. • Placement Test for: Honors Algebra II/ Trigonometry, AP European History & AP Music Theory • Check the Department website for testing date/times

  7. What is available to me? • Read the Course Catalog on website • English • Honors Forensics • Sophomore Honors English • Social Studies • AP European History • AP Human Geography • If you are currently in AP World History and doing well, you will continue with the second year of the course.

  8. There’s More!! • Math Department • Honors Algebra2/Trigonometry (Placement exam required) • Foreign Language • Third year Honors Spanish (FS5H) • Science Department • If you are currently in Chemistry or Honors Chemistry, and already passed the Living Environment Regents then • AP Biology, or a Biology Elective Lab Science • If you are currently in Biology or Honors Biology, then • Chemistry or Honors Chemistry

Last but Not Least! • Intel Research • Math, Computer Science, Social Science, Biological/Physical Science. • This is a 3 year commitment. • The research sequence is highly beneficial in college admissions because: • Sets you apart from other applicants. • Makes you a stronger candidate. More than 3 Special Permission Classes require a Special Permission Form.

  10. What will my Sophomore year program look like? • Art Requirement & Sophomore Research are Requirements for Sophomore year! • Some students may have taken Art/Music/and or Health at Bronx Science Summer School.
