Excellence in Energy for the Tourism Industry (EETI) • Objectives • Increase use of Energy Efficiency (EE) and Renewable Energy Technologies (RET) by SME hotels in the European Union • Strengthen hotel sector networks (e.g., National hotel associations, destination authorities, energy management agencies) for promotion of EE & RET in hotels • Build better links between users in the hotel sector and EE & RET suppliers and manufacturers • Stimulate innovation by manufacturers and suppliers of EE & RET to meet the needs of SME hotels • Sensitise National and Local Authorities on adoption of suitable supporting measures, policies and incentives to encourage use of EE & RET by SME hotels Implemented by UNWTO in cooperation withUNEP-DTIE, International Hotel and Restaurant Association (IH&RA), European Renewable Energy Council (EREC), French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME)

7. Possible lines of collaboration with TOI within the EETI Project: • Collaboration in conducting a survey on assessment of factors influencing EE and RE use by SME hotels in EU by promoting the EETI project and the survey itself to TOI’s networks of collaborators, partners and suppliers, encouraging hotels to reply and provide their input. • Provide TOI with an opportunity to participate in the activities of the End User Advisory Group, discussing training, information dissemination, usability of methodologies created within the project in order to help ensure the project delivers useful and practical outcomes for the hotels sector. • Participate in demonstration projects at pilot destinations

8. Launching and development of the ST-EP programme and foundation • Launching ST-EP Programme during the WSSD 2002 in Johannesburg • Rep. of Korea offers initial amount of USD 5 million and to host Foundation in Seoul (operations started in March 2006) • € 2 million contribution from SNV (+ in kind advisory services) to ST-EP Programme, € 1.5 million from Italy, US$ 200,000 from Macau, € 100,000 from Flemish Government, Technical Advisor from French Government

ST-EP projects: an example TANZANIA Cultural Tourism Enhancement & Diversification Project Higher visitor spending and benefits to rural communities through the Tanzania Cultural Tourism Programme • ACTIVITIES • Strengthen institutional support structure for Cultural Tourism • Guideline formulation and quality control • Training for business planning, and product improvement anddiversification • Identification and development of new cultural tourism enterprises • Active marketing and promotion • EXPECTED IMPACT • 10 new cultural tourism enterprises to be developed • 20% annual growth in number of tourists visiting CT enterprises (30,000 -> 50,000) • Additional 250 households directly (mechanisms 1-4) benefiting from the Cultural Tourism and 750 households indirectly (mechanisms 5-7) benefiting from it.
