  1. Bell Work: Finish your lab worksheet. Homework: Take Study Island Quiz: “Classify Matter”. • This is due by Friday morning. Read over notebook inspection form. • Visit the blog to look at the “Notebook Inspection #1 documents”

  2. Video Prompts: Write on the back of your lab sheet: 1.) What unique property of water prevented the balloon with water in it to burst? 2.) What unique property of water prevented the water drops from immediately spilling off of the penny? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eNSnj4ZfZ8

  3. The Amazing Properties of Water!

  4. Water is essential to life on Earth! All living things depend on water.

  5. Water is the only substance that can be found naturally in all 3 states—solid, liquid, & gas.

  6. Unlike most substances, water actually expands when it freezes! When it freezes it becomes less dense (the molecules are further apart) than its liquid form. This is why ice floats! – it is lighter than liquid water.

  7. Water has a neutral pH. It can dissolve both acids and bases.

  8. In Fact! Water is considered the “Universal Solvent”! It can dissolve many substances.

  9. Water has a high specific heat and heat of vaporization: It can absorb a lot of heat before changing temperature. And, it can absorb a lot of heat before evaporating.

  10. This is why water can… act as a coolant for things like cars and power plants. • regulate the earth’s temperature, making it a better place to live for all living things.

  11. Polar Nature of Water: Because of the unequal sharing of electrons between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms water molecules form a polar covalent bond—this causes the molecule to bend creating a positively charged end and a negatively charged end.

  12. Water Molecules “Stick” To Each Other The negatively charged oxygen atom is attracted to the positively charged hydrogen atoms of other water molecules. This causes the molecules to stick together. This is called cohesion-- • The ability for a substance to adhere to itself.

  13. Surface Tension Is a result of cohesion. Measures how difficult it is to break the surface of a liquid.

  14. Water “sticks” to other things too! Other substances are attracted to water molecules as well. This is called adhesion the ability for substances to adhere to other substances.

  15. Capillary Action The force that pulls water upward, against the force of gravity. Is a result of cohesion and adhesion. This is an essential property of plants. It is how water moves from the roots of a plant all the way to the leaves.

  16. Closure: What did you learn about water today that you did not understand before? Summarize this at the bottom of your notes and share with your lab partner.
