  5. Purpose To create a more team focused workplace and to change the culture of the MIL for the better.

  6. Our Ingredients: Library Core Values • In the Fall of 2017, our Staff Development Day focused on the ALA Core Values of Librarianship The Public Good Access Preservation Democracy Education/ Lifelong Learning IntellectualFreedom Professional-ism SocialResponsibility Diversity Confidentiality/ Privacy Service Sustainability

  7. MIL Gift Card Program Our Ingredients: • Only Library Administration had access • Those with proximity to Lib Admin received reward • Did not address our teamwork issues • Inherent limitations of “carrot” reward programs • Not rooted in library values

  8. Employee Feedback Our Ingredients: • Staff expressed feeling under/unappreciated My Conclusions on Employee Relationships • Trained to point out faults • Library Administration needed to shift the culture to celebrating success

  9. JetBlue Mosaic Customers Our Ingredients:

  10. Morsel Program - Goals • Empower employees to recognize their colleagues • Encourage thoughtful peer to peer conversations • Promote immediate and positive feedback • Reinforce Core Values • Provide data for staff evaluations

  11. Morsel Program - How it Works • Employees are given a Morsel for demonstrating excellence in Customer Service or one of the Core Values. • Accompanying that Morsel is the task to award a Morsel to another employee based on a specific assignment. • Example: Award a Morsel to a member of another department who exemplified excellent customer service. • That second Morsel recipient then is assigned a task of his/her own. Let’s see how that unfolds…

  12. Life of a Morsel

  13. Administration Tracking Morsels

  14. Collect 5, get a Prize! Life of a Morsel Gift Card to Restaurant Swag/ Office Gifts Library Admin covers a weekend shift* Hour of Comp Time**

  15. So, what’s changed? A year later… Library now open at 9am Demonstrated excellent teamwork at Library Mini Golf fundraiser

  16. Reflections after a year Lessons Learned • It takes a lot of extra time to manage. Sometimes I just want to reward without recording. • Some staff kept Morsels for a long time and needed multiple reminders to hand it on. • Only one (1) staff member got enough Morsels to redeem a prize in the year trial. • Need for a “Morsels Facts” page on our library blog so that people don’t forget what to do next.

  17. Employee Recognition Is it right for you? What does recognition mean to you/ your employee? How much money are you willing to spend? (Contributions from Trustees, Friends, or Local Business?) How much time do you have to devote to an employee recognition program?

  18. Other Employee Recognition Is it right for you? Caught doing good program could be perfect and fairly inexpensive. A peer shout out (free at meetings or with certificates) • Monthly employee trophy (traveling from desk to desk)

  19. Other Employee Recognition Is it right for you? Public Praise (Social Media praise of employees)*** • Thank you notes • Hall of Fame • Celebrate Library Employees Day
