  1. MT3: The USA as a World Power Level 3 Learning Target #3:What role did the USA play in the Panama Revolution and in the building of the Panama Canal?

Trade • Trade was important to the United states • The USA saw trade as vital to its survival • Trade with in the USA, Europe and Asia • Trade was no easy between the east and west • A canal would • make trade easier • Connect the oceans • Trade routes would be shorter =shipping times cut Question: Why was trade so important to the USA? What was the issue with ocean trade between the east and west coast?

To build or not to build • Everyone knew that a canal would save time and money • The 1850’s England and the USA had signed a treaty agreeing to not build a canal without the other • BUTTTTTTTTT in 1901 the USA negotiated a new treaty (Hay-Pauncefote Treaty) • This gave the USA all rights to building and controlling a canal

The Panama Canal • A French company had started to build a canal in Panama in 1881 but stopped in 1889 (due to diseases) • The French company agreed to sell all its rights to the canal to the USA • PROBLEM!!!!!! • Panama belonged to Columbia • Secretary Hay offered Columbia 10 million and $250,000 a year • Columbia REFUSED

Panama Revolution • Panama did not want to be controlled by Columbia and they wanted the USA to build the canal • Panama revolted against Columbia • President Roosevelt (USA) sent military ships to Panama as support for Panamas Independence • The USA recognized Panama’s independence and singed a treaty with them allowing the USA to build the canal. • Question: How did the USA support Panamas revolution/independence movement?

  6. Effects of the Panama Canal • Linked both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans • Shortened the Shipping time • Allowed the USA faster access to all its territories (Hawaii and Philippines) • Many people died from diseases building the canal • USA secures its place as a world POWER • Questions: What were the effects of the USA building a man made canal through Panama?
