Pass/No Pass • Pass: C or higher, receive units • No Pass: C- or lower, no units • Can electronically change to P/NP until the end of Week 2 • After Week 2, must submit an enrollment exception • Cannot take any major required courses P/NP • Can opt to take up to 4 units per quarter P/NP • Roll over units

  3. CALCULATING PASS/NOT PASS COURSES IN GPA P/NP does not affect GPA With P/NP: 3.880 Without P/NP: 3.342

  4. CALCULATION OF G.P.A.

  5. Calculate GPA • Example #1: • Bio 93, 4 unit course • Student receives a C- • How many grade points does the student receive? • Example #2: • Bio 93, 4 units: Grade A • Chem 1A, 4 units: Grade C • Writing 39B, 4 units: Grade B- • Anthro 2A, 4 units: Grade A- • GPA?

  6. CALCULATION OF G.P.A. Add the total number of grade points and divide by the total number of completed units to get your GPA: 41.6 / 14 = 2.97 GPA You can also calculate your GPA on StudentAccess

Bell Curve • Calculating grades • Example 1: • Total points: 50 • Mean: 23 (assuming this is a C) • Standard deviation: 4 • Student’s score: 19 • Student’s grade: ? • Example 2: • Total points: 50 • Mean: 35 (assuming this is a C) • Student’s score: 57 • Standard deviation: 4 • Student’s grade: ?

  8. Repeating Courses • Can repeat up to 16 units • 2nd grade replaces 1st grade in GPA • Original grade remains on transcript • After 16 units, the grades average • Financial aid will only pay to repeat course 2 times • If class taken for a letter grade, must be repeated for a letter grade • If taken P/NP can repeat for a letter grade

Academic holds • Restrict from performing certain actions until hold is removed • Classes dropped at fee deadline if hold is not removed • U/U and Pharm Sci holds: • Hold placed if did not schedule appt by deadline • Will not be removed until attend appt • Can still make appts • Will not be able to enroll or see window • Resolving holds: • Contact the department that placed the hold • Can find out who placed the hold by logging onto StudentAccess

  10. WORKLOAD CREDIT AND WITHDRAWAL WC’s (workloads) and W’s (withdrawals) do not get calculated into your GPA.

  11. Transcript Notations • W • Dropped a class after Week 6 • NR • No report • Turns into an F at the end of 1 quarter • I • Incomplete • Turns into an F at the end of 3 quarters • Agreement set up with professor due to an emergency • Must have been passing at the time of the midterm

  12. Normal Progress and Class Standing • General Catalgue • Fall quarter 12-16 units • Winter quarter • Students need to take 16 units to not be on unit probation

Probation • Academic Probation (AP) • Quarterly and/or cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 • 1.999-1.5 • Disqualification (DQA) • Quarterly and/or cumulative GPA falls below a 1.5 • 1.499-0.0 • First offense • Disqualification (DQF) • Quarterly and/or cumulative GPA falls below a 1.5 • 1.499-0.0 • Second offense • Unit Probation (UP) • Not making normal progress with units • Progress towards a major • Not in the proper classes for completing the major in 4 years

Does a student need to be passing at the midterm point? • What will a NR turn into at after one quarter? • What does a “W” mean? • What grade will graduate professional schools turn a Pass in to? A No Pass in to? • Will a Pass or No Pass grade affect your GPA? • True or False: A student can opt to take a major required course Pass/No Pass • Midterm #1 maximum possible points: 100 • Class mean for the midterm: 50 • Highest score on the midterm: 70 • Standard Deviation: 10 • Your student’s score: 30
