  1. Media Stereotypes.Teens in Film Learning to identify teen stereotypes in film and how to challenge representations.

  2. Activity sheet to handout Look at the images and identify the different stereotypes. • What stereotype can you see? Give description, as a sentence of their identity. • Describe the groups dynamics and their friends – what narrative can you create? E. g. where are they from? What are their backgrounds? What are they about to do?

  3. The media uses stereotypical characters that are instantly recognisable. Can you think of a how film represents teenage characters? Here are few classifications. Can you identify more? Do they reflect your experience? • The Wild Teen: Drunk, party, sex driven • The Goodie Teen – studious, girl-next-door • The Misfit - nerd, dork, awkward kid • The popular Teen – trendy, fashionable

  4. Think about how stereotypes are used: • Often stereotypes are used in the media and film to provide instant recognition of ideas and characters. It is easy to rely on the audience’s existing ideas instead of spending time developing character. This results in many character in film and TV being almost identifiable and certain actors always playing the same roles.

  5. FILM CHARACTERSWill explore more:Lady Bird, Bend it like beckhamLove, Simon, Mean Girls, beneath the clouds, looking for alibrandi) Describe what you see: the teen characters and their friends How are they represented? Do they fit in a stereotype? What signals are there?

  6. Questions TO DISCUSS Why do you think that the media exploits/ makes use of stereotypes? What impressions will the audience get as a result of: • Facial expression (who are they looking at?) • Gesture or posture • Clothes • Character stereotype

Movie trailer analysis • Mean Girls (2002) – USA • Love, Simon (2018) - USA • Looking For Alibrandi (2000) -AUS • Beneath The Clouds (2002) - AUS • Bend It Like Beckham (2001) - UK Similarities in themes and representations: • Identity, belonging, first-love • Comedy and drama conventions • What technical and symbolic elements are used? Discuss in groups similarities, differences, what you do differently.
