Why?: • A diverse geography • A long pre-history (diverse people) Africans are more genetically diverse than the inhabitants of the rest of the world combined. In fact, 9 out of 14 DNA markers exist only among African populations and people descended from them
Geographic Diversity • Desert • Rainforest • Dense trees • Lack of edible vegetation • Mediterranean type • Northern coast & southern tip • Fertile soil / milder climate • Savanna • Grassy plains dotted with trees (40% of continent) • Highlands • Temperate grasslands in mountainous regions
