(Charles Martel’s grandson) in unified Europe in 800 A.D. • Most of life in Battle • Pope Crowned him “Holy Roman Emperor”. • Controversial • German King = crowned Emperor • Caused future power struggles • Built schools across Empire & in Aachen (Capital)
