Common Mistakes in Presentations • Meetings • Too Much • Too Little • Agenda - Lack of Focus on the Topic • Formal Topic Presentations • Poorly Constructed Presentation • No flow • No continuity between slides or topics • Graphics, Graphics and more Graphics • Lack of detail / substance • All flash – no ‘meat’ • Complicated charts or graphs

  7. Common Mistakes in Public Speaking • Jargon • Acronyms • Difficult Words or Poor Word Usage • Inside Stories or Jokes • Volume • Soft - Lack of confidence? • Loud – Pushy? Arrogant? • Inappropriate Humor • Making the audience the butt of the joke • Off Color Jokes • Trying to Fool the Audience

  11. 6 Elements of an Effective Presentation • Be Prepared • Give of Yourself • Use personal examples & stories • Stay Relaxed • Focus on the message not the audience • Use Natural Humor • Poke fun at yourself or something you did • Plan Your Body & Hand Gestures • Pay Attention to Details

  12. Preparation Tips • What is the purpose of the presentation? • Who is the audience? What is their main interest in this topic? • What do I really know and believe about this topic as it relates to this audience? • What additional research can I do? • What are the main points of this presentation? • What supporting information and stories can I use to support each of my main points? • What visual aids, if any, do I need? • Opening & Closing • Do I have an effective opening grabber? • In my final summary, how will I plan to tell them "What's In It For Me?" • Practice, Practice, Practice… …one more thing PRACTICE!!!
