  1. THE GOOD CLUB GUIDE EXTRA:FOR A CLUB CAPTAIN

  2. GETTING STARTED The following sections will provide additional help and support for a Club Captain in key areas of the role. This resource contains additional information to the ASA Good Club guides, and should be read in conjunction with the ASA Good Club Guides, available through the British Swimming website at www.britishswimming.org

  3. HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE • As a reference to assist you/others in their role • To assist a club in recruiting Club Captains by giving information about a role • To prompt discussions at your club about the standards and qualities of Club Captains needed • As part of an induction for a new Club Captain • To input into the development /action plan for the club

  4. ACTIVITY 1: HOW DOES THAT FIT WITH YOUR ROLE? Using the role description in the ASA Good club guide for a Club Captain, consider how this relates to you, and the role you are doing / could be doing in the future? E.g. are there areas, as a Club Captain, that you may need to consider as part of your role having read the above information?

  5. ACTIVITY 2: WHAT SKILLS CAN YOU OFFER AS A CLUB CAPTAIN? Try writing down the skills you think you bring to the role of a Club Captain e.g knowledge of young people, website design. Also think about what this will mean to the club, and how you can demonstrate your skills to the club

  6. Now write down who you think you need to share this information with. E.g your Coach, the Chairperson, the Club Workforce Co-ordinator. TOP TIP: Arrange an appropriate time to speak with them to ensure that they find time for you and are not distracted with other jobs!

  7. ACTIVITY 3: WHAT WOULD AN IDEAL CLUB LOOK LIKE? In an ideal world, write down below the areas that you feel a club should have in place to support the needs of its members, particularly the young athletes? e.g. a regular opportunity for young volunteers to be listened to or a training/mentoring programme for young volunteers Give your club an overall score out of 10 on its current position (1 is poor, 10 is excellent)

  8. ACTIVITY 4: WHAT COULD YOU DO? Looking at the suggested roles of a Club Captain in the Good Club Guide, try writing down your ideas on what you think you could do at the club to help it develop.

  9. ACTIVITY 5: SELF REFLECTION ACTIVITY What could you do to gain further experience in being a Club Captain after reading this resource and/or other resources? Eg. Contact another swimming Club Captain or another Club Captain from another sport to learn how they do the role? What information might be useful for you to follow up / gain further information on to help you in being a Club Captain?

  10. Who are the people who will be important for you to speak / communicate with in order to achieve the above and why? What further help do you need in developing in your role as a Club Captain? (You may be able to discuss this with your club Workforce Co-ordinator)

  11. Twelve months from today, what is the one thing you would like to have achieved in being a Club Captain? TIP: Set a reminder in your phone / diary / calendar that you have committed to doing this, and to re-visit this page!

  12. SUMMARY We hope you have found this guide informative in guiding you in your role, and providing you with information and helpful tips. We wish you a great experience in your role and thank you once again for all your time and commitment you are giving to the sport.

  13. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The ASA are grateful for the contributions and input from the ASA Youth Forum in ensuring these resources are written and reviewed by young volunteers, for young volunteers.
