  2. Economy • GDP Per Capita • $1000 (compared to $49,800 for United States) • 20% of their GDP is Agriculture, 25% Industry, and 55% Services • 78.6% of workers work in Agriculture, 5.7% in Industry, and 15.7% work in services • Unemployment rate of 35% in 2008 (down from 40% in 2005) • (1)

Economy: Exports • Afghanistan’s main exports include Opium, fruits, hand-woven carpets, wool, cotton, and other high quality textiles • Export mainly to Pakistan, but also to India, Russia, and Iran. • They export around $376 Million, but import $6.39 Billion • Import machines, food, oil • The Afghanistan government cut their debt in half from 2008 to 2011. ($2.7 billion to $1.28 billion) • (1)

  4. Economy: Currency and Population • Population of around 30 Million • Work force of 15 million, indicating a low life expectancy and dependency ratio • Their currency is called “afghanis” • AFA • Exchange rate of 51 per US dollar • One US dollar is equivalent to around 51 Afghanis (1)
