Intermediate level circulation in the southwestern part of the Japan/East Sea

This study explores the intermediate level circulation in the southwestern part of the Japan/East Sea (JES) using autonomous drifters deployed at depths of 500m, 700m, and 800m from 1998 to 2003. The research highlights the weak stratification, complicated bottom topography, and various factors affecting circulation patterns, such as a cyclonic boundary current along Korean and Japanese coasts and the influence of the Ulleung Basin. This work integrates findings from previous studies and provides critical insights into flow variability and topography's role in circulation dynamics.

  5. Method • Divide the area into bins of 0.5O X 0.5O • Average over each bin

Errors • Uncertainty in fix • Drift at the surface • Lags between actual surfacing & decending times and the fix • Drifts during descending and ascending • Vertical shear • Drifting depth of floats: 500m, 700m, 800m • Correction based on geostrophic calculation (Lavender et al, 2000) • In JES the vertical shear is small
