BLACK HISTORY FACTS 1 Feb-Slave trade was started in 1441 by the Portuguese. 2 Feb- The Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black pilots in the armed forces. 3 Feb- The Amistad Mutiny(revolt) took place in 1839 on a Portuguese slaver on the Atlantic Ocean. 4 Feb- Hiram Revels was the first African American elected to Congress, 1870.

BLACK HISTORY FACTS, cont’d • Monday Feb 7th - The 13th, 14th , and 15th amendments to the Constitution are called the Civil War amendments. • Tuesday Feb 8th -The 13th Amendment passed in 1865 abolished slavery in the United States. • Wednesday Feb 9th. -The Fourteenth Amendment was passed` in 1868 and gives former slaves American Citizenship.

BLACK HISTORY FACTS, cont’d • Feb 10th-The Fifteenth Amendment was passed in 1870 and it gave freed slaves due process and equal protection under the law. • Feb 11th- Halle Berry and Denzel Washington both took home Best Actress and Best Actor Oscars in 2003. • Feb 14h- Abraham Lincoln jokingly blames the Civil War on Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

BLACK HISTORY FACTS, cont’d • Feb 15h- Due to the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 by Eli Whitney, the dying institution of slavery was saved. • Feb 16th- Alabama State University was founded in 1867 by nine former slaves known as the Marion 9. ASU is one of the nation’s oldest Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

  5. BLACK HISTORY FACTS • 17th Feb- The NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) serves as the governing body for the nine historically Black fraternities and sororities. The oldest fraternity is Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,Inc. and the oldest sorority is Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

  6. BLACK HISTORY FACTS • 18thFeb- People died, literally died for you so you could sit in this room. During the Civil Rights Movement they died for you, during slavery they died for you. You should really think about your “free” education the next time you want to act up in class. • 22ndFeb- Kappa Alpha Psi was founded as the first historically Black fraternity west of the Mississippi River at Indiana University on January 5, 1911. Sigma Gamma Rho was founded at Butler University in 1922.

  7. BLACK HISTORY FACTS • Feb 25th- In 1663, the monarch in England chartered the Company of Royal African Adventures. This company was the only royal chartered company allowed to pull slaves from West Africa.
