  1. WHAT IS TRANSLATION? Translation is the communication of the meaning of a source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text. Is translation a synonymous of bilingualism? It is a false assumption because every bilingual individual can’t be considered automatically as a translator.

  2. Who is a translator? • A person whose job is translating written texts from a source text into a target one. • He should possess a good knowledge of both source and target language. SOURCE LANGUAGE vs. TARGET LANGUAGE The first one is the language which need to be translated in the second one.

  3. Translators vs interpreters • Translators can’t be considered interpreters because they focus on WRITTEN TEXTS. • Interpreters work with the SPOKEN LANGUAGE. The unique feature they have in common is the attempt to facilitate the understanding of something written down in another language (translators) or said in another language (interpreters).

  4. The job of a translator A translator may specialise in : • Scientific, technical or commercial material like reports, manual and brochures • Legal documents • Literary work (novels, poetry, plays) • Media world (film script, subtitles) • Educational resources (textbooks, e-books, apps) • Online content.

  5. Being a freelance translator • A translator may choose to work as a freelance employer. • The use of social networking websites is the first step to start a career as a translator. • At present, there are two good translator social networking websites : -http://www.proz.com/ -http://www.translatorscafe.com/
