  1. Fat Jessica Cowie Introduction: A fat molecule has three chains of hydrogen and carbon atoms. There is the backbone which is called the Glycerol and then there is three fatty acids coming out of it to make it look like an E shape. There is fat in nearly everything we eat. Some people eat to much fat but also some people eat to little. When people eat too much fat they can become obese which can become a huge problem. In Britain 60.8% of adults and 31.1%of children are obese which is half the population of Britain. An experiment was done to extract the fat out of crisps and see if expensive crisps were higher in fat than cheap crisps. Conclusion: It was found out that the cheap crisps had 0.6 grams more fat in then compared to the expensive crisps. It is healthier to buy expensive crisps than cheaper ones. Method: 10g of Bacon Rashers (cheap) were measured out and then crushed with a pestle and mortar. Then the crushed crisps went into separate boiling tubes and 25ml of acetone was added into each tube. Then the mixture of acetone and crisps got shaken until they had thoroughly mixed together. Then the mixture went through filter paper leaving the acetone and the fat. After that the acetone and fat went into another boiling tube so it could be put in a beaker of boiling hot water. Then on top we put on a stopper but it had a hole in it so the solvent could evaporate through a delivery tube then into a test tube in cold water with ice cubes so it could cool down again. After that had happened we were left with the distillate in one tube and the amount of fat the had crisps had in another tube. All that had to be then the experiment was repeated but with the Kettle Crisps (expensive). Results: After the experiment was over the fat content that was left over was weighed. It was found that the cheap crisps had 1.4 grams of fat left over where as the expensive crisps on had 0.8 grams left over.
