  1. CEIBAL:Capacity Enhancement for Implementing Bologna Action Lines in Georgia Regional Academic Summit „New trends in Medical Education & Bologna Process – Experiences from Europe, July 23 2010 „European Standards in Medical Education / General Principles of Curriculum of Medicine based on MEDINE2“ Ulrike Arnold

  2. What is MEDINE? MEDINE = Medical Education in Europe MEDINE 1: Thematic Network in the frame of ERASMUS 5 different Task Forces (e.g.TUNING, led by the University of Edinburgh) coordinated by University of Bristol, UK duration: 3 years 2004 – 2007 MEDINE 2: Academic Network in the frame of ERASMUS coordinated by University of Edinburgh duration: 3 years, start in October2009 – September 2012

  3. Why MEDINE? • because the education and training of medical doctors to a high standard is critical to the physical health, well-being, productivity and social cohesion of European society • because mobility of medical students and practitioners within Europe is limited, despite increasing mobility of citizens • because standards and content of medical education programmes are inconsistent, and the transparency and comparability of qualifications are limited • because there is an urgent need to modernise and harmonise medical education and training across Europe in response to rapidly changing societal needs

  4. Structure of MEDINE: The Workpackages: 01 MEDINElingua 02 Mobility Toolkit 03 Tuning Process 04 Bologna First Cycle 05 Curriculum Trends 06 Progressing Bologna 07 Research 08 Network management 09 Dissemination of MEDINE2 outputs 10 Exploitation of MEDINE2 outputs 11 Quality Assurance of the Network

  5. Progressing Bologna... what does it mean? • a clearly defined common goal: to create a European space for higher education in order to enhance the employability and mobility of citizens and to increase the international competitiveness of European higher educationKey objectives of the Bologna Process: • Quality of higher education in Europe • Greater mobility of staff and students • Employability

  6. Progressing Bologna... how to do it? • Adoption of a system of easily readable and comparable degrees ( Diploma Supplement)‏ • Adoption of a system based on 3 cycles (undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate) • ECTS-compatible credit systems also covering lifelong learning activities • Promotion of mobility (students, teachers, researchers, administrative staff)‏ • European dimension in quality assurance, with comparable criteria and methods • Promotion of European dimension in higher education • Lifelong learning through a wide range of learning paths • Promotion of research in education

  7. Key characteristics of a medical curriculum: • Learning outcomes oriented (statements of wha a learner is expected to know, understand and/or be able to demonstrate after completion of a process of learning) • Learner-centered vs. teacher centred • Modularised and described with Credits (ECTS)‏ • organ/system oriented vs. discipline oriented • Integrated vs. pre-clinical/clinical part (learning spiral)‏ • Multiple methods of assessment • Quality assurance ( evaluation = focuses on programs, assessment = focuses on learners)‏ • Offering mobility windows • Integrating research in education • Fostering lifelong learning • Offering flexible learning paths

  8. How is the situation in Europe? • Medicine does not belong to the pioneers of the implementation of the Bologna process, especially regarding the 3 cycle system • The Cycle system is realised in Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, partly France... and more and more are following (e.g. discussions in Sweden, Germany etc.) • Obstacles are sometimes legal requirements, but often it is a question of ideology and/or knowledge

  9. The future of medical education in Europe? • The Bologna Process will be more and more implemented in Medicine in the next years • The stakeholders will support this development (students, employers etc.) • The rapidly changes and job opportunities for the medical profession will foster this trend • The changes and the needs of society will also support the trend
