  1. Operation of First Cryomoduleat the NML Test Facility Jerry Leibfritz December 20, 2010

  2. Outline Quick Recap of NML Facility & CM1 CM1 Test Plan Warm Coupler Conditioning Cooldown to 2K Vibration Measurements Displacement Measurements (WPM) Summary Future Plans AEM Meeting

  3. Phase-1 Layout of NML Capture Cavity 2 (CC2) Cryomodule-1 (CM1) (Type III+) 5 MW RF System for CM1 CC2 RF System AEM Meeting 3

  4. NML Test Facility AEM Meeting

  5. Cryomodule-1 (CM1) AEM Meeting

  6. Cryomodule-1 (DESY kit) • Our first goal is to understand the performance of cavities in CM1 compared to HTS tests at DESY • We want to verify our assembly techniques in CAF • Note that the dressed cavities provided by DESY for CM1 are NOT 35 MV/M cavities • We do not expect to meet the S1 goal of 31.5 MV/M • Average of Chechia tests is 23.5 MV/M • Anything close to this number will be a great success • Working to understand what other tests of CM1 might be useful for ILC AEM Meeting

  7. CM1 Test Plan • Virtually identical to DESY run plan for XFEL modules (courtesy of Dennis Kostin) and Fermilab experience at HTS and CC2 • TEST PROCEDURE: • 1. RF Cable Calibration done • 2. Technical Interlock / Sensor checkout done • 3. RF source / Waveguides / LLRF done • 4. Warm Input RF Coupler Conditioning done • 5. Cooldown to 2K done • 6. Cavity Spectra measurements • 7. Cavity Tuners Test and Tuning • 8. Coupler Qload measurement • 9. Set Cavities On Resonance • 10. Cold Input RF Coupler and Cavity Conditioning • 11. Single Cavity RF Measurements • 12. RF Measurement of 8 Cavity Cryomodule • 13. Cryo performance testing (non-ILC conditions) AEM Meeting

  8. CM1 Warm Coupler Conditioning Conditioning Sequence for #2 FEP, PMT response during #8 conditioning • RF system is demonstrated to ~3MW @ 2Hz, 1.3 ms pulse • Warm coupler conditioning completed on all 8 cavities • up to 1 MW for short (up to 400 us pulses) • 600 kW for 800, 1300 us pulses AEM Meeting

  9. CM1 Cooldown Plan • CM1 Consists of Three Cryogenic Circuits • 80K Nitrogen Shield Circuit • 5K Helium Shield Circuit • 2K Helium Cavity Circuit • Constraints on Cooldown of Each Circuit • The difference between the inlet and outlet temperatures of each circuit must be maintained at or below 50K in the temperature range from roughly 300K to 100K • Cooldown Rate to be kept at <= 10K/hour • 300 mm Gas Return Pipe vertical temperature difference to be maintained <= 15K Alex Martinez AEM Meeting

  10. CM1 Cooldown Timeline • Cooldown to 4.5K • Acc. Division approval for CM1 cooldown granted on 11/17/10 • Cooldown process was controlled in around the clock shifts • Cooldown from 300K to 4.5K was achieved in 56 hours • Cooldown to 2K • Cooldown performed on Monday, November 22nd • Cryogenic Study Plan • Tuning of cryogenic plant parameters for better stability • Initial Heat Load measurements in expected range; more detailed review of data underway • Resistive heating being used to simulate dynamic loads and quantify system capacity AEM Meeting

  11. NML CM1 Cryogenic Synoptic Interface AEM Meeting

  12. CM1 Cooldown from Room Temperature AEM Meeting

  13. Vibration During Cooldown (Day 1) Continuously Data logged Geophone System Flowing gas thru piping circuits… Quad transverse accelerations of 0.05g Cooldown begins Quad vertical accelerations of 0.1g Mike McGee *Instantaneous accelerations based on peak(g)/sec AEM Meeting

  14. Vibration During Cooldown (Day 3) Vertical peaks above 0.1 g Transverse peak above 0.1g Liquid fill (w/in CM1) Cavities full at 4.2K AEM Meeting

  15. NML CM1 Superfluid Transition (2K) Superfluid (2K) operation quite stable! (Baseline vertical 8m, transverse 6 m (rms)) Quad transverse integrated displacement of 8 m (rms) Quad vertical integrated displacement of 10 m (rms) *Cavities move vertically & horizontally at ~1 m (rms) AEM Meeting

  16. Wire Position Monitors - Displacement Positions are measured at 7 locations by a stretched wire through BPMs attached to the 300mm return pipe N27 Java Application Nathan Eddy AEM Meeting

  17. Initial Cooldown - Vertical AEM Meeting

  18. Initial Cooldown - Horizontal AEM Meeting

  19. Final Cooldown- Vertical AEM Meeting

  20. Final Cooldown - Horizontal AEM Meeting

  21. 5 Days at 2K Vertical Horizontal • All monitors, except WMH03, are well behaved. We see RMS from 2-10um over several days. AEM Meeting

  22. Cooldown Summary • In general, all systems (Cryogenic, Geophone, WPM) worked as expected • Cooldown went smoothly • We see interesting motion as the module is cooled down • Similar to what was observed at DESY & KEK, but smaller in magnitude • Plenty of new data • Need time to digest, recalibrate systems as required, and compare with other measurements • Will continue to monitor systems while powering cavities AEM Meeting

  23. Future Plans for CM1 • Accelerator Division approval for Cold RF operation granted on 12/10/10 • Test cave secured and interlocked - 12/15/10 • Single Cavity RF Power tests now through mid-January • Shutdown in January to attach waveguide distribution and prepare for multi-cavity powering • Phase-1 of Project is now complete! • CC2 and CM1 have been cooled to 2K and RF powered • Now, work towards Phase-2 Beam in 2012 • More results and update on facility expansion in next talk! AEM Meeting
