Organize your Grammar Book chapters in order. • 3. Swap Grammar Books. Complete your partner’s practice on your loose-leaf sheet of paper. If you finish early, write feedback on the loose-leaf.   5. Ch. 4 Verb Tenses SST 502: Maintain consistent verb tense on the basis of the preceding clause or sentence.

  6. Background Knowledge • Define verb • Define tense • Introduce 2 important helping verbs: to be & to have • Give the forms of the verb “to be” in the present & past tense (possibly with a conjugation chart) • Give the forms of the verb “to have”

  10. Common Mistakes • Misusing irregular verbs(The past tense of sing is notsinged) • Switching the past and past perfect (I ran is correct; I had run is correct;I had ran is not correct.) • Inconsistent tense (especially switching between past & present)

  11. Ideas • Verb tense is complex! Think carefully about how you will present your information. • You will need to use lots of examples and explanation to make the tenses clear. • You might use conjugation charts, dialogue, comparison of very similar sentences, or other ideas to make verb tense clear. • Think about your presentation as you view the next slides – a quick review of old notes. (Don’t try to copy it all down! This is just a refresher.)

Irregular Verbs • To remember the different forms of irregular verbs, you may find it helpful to repeat these three phrases before each verb: • Usually I ________________ (Present Form) • Yesterday I ________________ (Simple Past Form) • In the past, I have ___________ (Past Perfect Form) This form of the verb is also called the past participle.

  13. Why does this all matter for the EXPLORE? • Consistency means… • TO KEEP THE SAME WAY! • If you see simple past, keep it simple past • If you see simple future, keep it… • Simple future • If you see the perfect tense (has, have, or had), keep it… • Perfect tense

Most French verbs form their passé composé by adding the verb “avoir,” removing the “-er” ending, and adding “e” with an accent grave. • However, here are some irregular verbs: • Avoir • Etre • Pouvoir Common Mistakes • A common mistake is not forming the passé composé of irregular verbs correctly.

  21. 3. Correct mistakes • Here are some common errors people make with irregular verbs: • Ex 1: I have drove to the supermarket. WRONG! • “I drove” OR “I have driven” • Don’t mix the two up!
